The Community Engagement Coordinator plays a vital, people-centred role in fostering connection, compassion, and capacity both within the shelter and across the broader community. With a focus on advocacy, enrichment programming, and direct spiritual and emotional support, this position is ideal for someone with strong facilitation skills, a heart for inclusion, and a deep understanding of trauma-informed care and community systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Planning, coordinating, and facilitating a variety of meaningful activities that promote wellness, community connection, and personal development for residents;
- Working closely with employees and community partners, ensuring that activities reflect the needs and interests of residents while supporting overall shelter goals;
- Participate in delivering, developing, and administrating advocacy workshops focused on building capacity in the business community to engage compassionately with vulnerable individuals, reduce stigma, and foster practical, service-oriented responses;
- Collaborate with communication employees and community partners to expand the number of workshops delivered annually, while collecting feedback from participants and partners to evaluate impact and improve content;
- Conduct regular connections with residents and provide care through listening, empathizing, encouraging, and connecting individuals with Spiritual and/or mental health care and supports;
- Develop a quarterly activity calendar, promote participation within the shelter, and build a volunteer base to support the delivery of activities and learning opportunities.
Qualifications
- Excellent communication skills (including public speaking), with the ability to clearly convey information both verbally and in writing to promote collaboration and team cohesion;
- Experience facilitating group activities in community, shelter, or support service settings;
- Experience managing multiple programs simultaneously, with the ability to adapt to changing priorities and circumstances in a dynamic environment;
- Familiarity with local service systems, referral processes, and business engagement;
- Deep understanding of homelessness, substance use, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and mental health challenges;
- Degree in social work, human services, a related field and/or equivalent experience working in frontline human services or community advocacy;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Teams, and other relevant platforms, for efficient documentation, data analysis, and collaboration;
- Valid driver’s license, a clean driving abstract and a reliable vehicle (mileage paid);
- This position is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Sector).
This is a full-time role, Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with some evening and weekend work required depending on programming. Benefits are available after six months of employment.
