The Early Psychosis Intervention (EPI) team is a specialized health care service that provides the best assistance available to young people (13–30) who have recently developed psychosis.
The EPI team includes a Psychiatrist, a Community Clinician, Group and Family Therapist, Substance Use Counsellor, Occupational Therapist and/or Vocational Counselor, Youth Care Worker, Psychologist, Educator, Dietitian and others.
The EPI Occupational Therapist works alongside these young clients to build on their independent living skills, pursue education/work, engage in their community, foster strength and resiliency, and maintain a sense of hope in their recovery journey.
The role would include assessment of the client’s functional status and recommendations of appropriate resources and supports to facilitate progress toward their recovery goals. The OT may run groups on themes related to exploring and accessing meaningful activities, including skill building and accessing resources.
Rapport-building, psychoeducation, and Family And Natural Supports (FANS) inclusion are key to this role, as clients are younger and will be new to mental health supports.
As the Occupational Therapist, you are instrumental in ensuring that supports are customized to the strengths, needs and desires of the client.
