POSITION OVERVIEW:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is seeking a Community Outreach Worker for the Reach Together Tutoring Program (RTTP), housed in the UMBC Math Project in the George and Betsy Sherman Center. Aligned with the overarching missions of the UMBC Math Initiative and the Sherman Center, and reporting to the Associate Director of the UMBC Math Project, the incumbent will play a critical role in implementing and sustaining RTTP. RTTP is a comprehensive academic acceleration math program that combines high-dosage tutoring, delivered by UMBC student-tutors, with professional development to help all students access and master rigorous, grade-level concepts.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years in community outreach, health care, research, and/or social services.
  • Knowledge of elementary and middle school math curriculums, strategies, and learning strategies.
  • Experience leading college students and/or adults
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • A demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to diversity, low-income communities, and high-needs schools.
    Note: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 1-2 years of Program Management experience leading academic programming in urban public schools (afterschool, tutoring, summer learning opportunities).
  • Experience working with elementary and middle school students in public schools with academic programming.
  • Course credits in a field related to education (education, social work, psychology, math).
  • Experience working with bi-lingual students.
Responsibilities

Community Outreach Workers are responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of tutoring sessions within the Reach Together Tutoring Program (RTTP). This includes overseeing the daily on-site operations, monitoring math coaches, providing training as necessary, organizing and maintaining accurate records, and serving as the liaison between school-based and RTTP staff.
