POSITION SUMMARY
The Community Peace Officer (CPO) is responsible for community awareness and day-to-day enforcement of Municipal Bylaws and Provincial Statutes. In addition, the CPO will assist County departments, Emergency Response agencies, and outside agencies as required. This position will professionally promote public awareness and education while striving to achieve voluntary compliance. The program is delivered through a proactive, preventative, educational, and highly visible patrol program.
PUBLIC AWARENESS AND EDUCATION
- Work with the Brazeau County team to maintain positive public relations
- Participate in community relations, public education and safety, and crime prevention-related initiatives as assigned
- Contributes to planning and delivering public awareness events and initiatives on behalf of Community Services
- Animal Control
- Respond to complaints, apprehend animals, provide safe rescue and release of animals, educate public, answer inquires, complete detailed reports, transport animals, appear and testify in court, maintain files, and liaise with outside agencies as required
- Maintains positive working relationship with any/all animal control contractors as required
- Liaison with rescue groups; and local veterinary clinic regarding canine control and other areas of concern
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- A justice studies or law enforcement diploma or in a related law enforcement field is required.
- A combination of equivalent education and experience in law enforcement may be considered.
- A recruit candidate may be considered if they are a suitable fit for the role and qualified to enroll in officer training within an available intake period of starting employment.
EXPERIENCES/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- A minimum of two years related law enforcement experience is desired.
- Prior municipal enforcement experience, including bylaw enforcement, is an asset.
- Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a variety of audiences is required.
- Ability to contribute as a dedicated team member to establish and maintain positive working relationships within the department.
- Ability to work under minimal supervision with strong independent decision-making skills.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to manage time effectively between field and administrative duties.
- Effective writing ability and computer skills are required to perform in this position
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Must have conflict resolution skills to de-escalate conversations and situations effectively
- Ability to uphold and handle complex issues in an ethical and professional manner, and maintain a high level of confidentiality
- The individual should have knowledge of safe handling of domestic animals, including various animal breeds and species
- Extensive knowledge and application of provincial statutes and municipal bylaws are necessary to effectively perform the duties required of an appointed Community Peace Officer.
