The Central Okanagan Food Bank (COFB) provides comprehensive food assistance to our community. Our programs not only address immediate hunger challenges but also strive for a more equitable and sustainable distribution of existing food resources. We offer nutritional support in schools and provide food and nutrition-related education and resources for all community members. We serve all individuals regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital status, ethnicity, language, disability, or health status. COFB has developed programs specifically targeting assistance toward seniors, children, infants, pregnant mothers, and those with medically diagnosed dietary needs and restrictions.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Program Coordinator will contribute to the development, delivery, and evaluation of both the Food for Thought and More Than Food programs. This role involves diverse programming focused on food education, wellness, community connection, and nutritional support in schools, while fostering partnerships that empower clients and support their long-term well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, community development, public health, or a related field such as human service worker.
  • 3+ years of experience in program management/coordination, social services, or community-based programming.
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, especially in food security, is highly valued.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Strong program planning, organizational, and attention to detail skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and foster connections with clients and community partners.
  • Empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity, essential for working with diverse communities in the humanitarian sector.
  • Proficiency in data management, program evaluation, and reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of food insecurity, poverty reduction, and community resources.
  • Familiarity with the Central Okanagan community and its unique challenges is an asset.
  • Flexible schedule to accommodate evening or weekend events/programming.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and resilience in a fast-paced environment.
  • Integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to ethical practices.
  • Proficient in Mailchimp and Canva (asset).
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
    Work Environment: The Program Coordinator role is typically divided between program planning, event management (offsite as needed), and administrative tasks, with approximately 40% of the role focused on administrative duties.
    The successful candidate must be comfortable with repetitive lifting, bending and sorting items up to 40 lbs.

Food for Thought Program: The Food for Thought program is dedicated to keeping kids in School District 23 fueled for play and learning. Our mission is simple yet impactful: to nourish young minds. We understand the crucial link between proper nutrition and a child’s ability to focus on their studies, engage in activities, and thrive in their learning environment. That’s why we’re committed to providing 5,000 nutritious meals every week to students who would otherwise go hungry.

  • Operational Oversight: Coordinate volunteer activities, food procurement, and delivery logistics.
  • Data Tracking: Monitor program effectiveness by tracking data from each program and school site.
  • Communication: Serve as the primary liaison with stakeholders, including School District 23, packing facilities, vendors, volunteers, and school site coordinators.
  • Nutrition Oversight: Ensure program goals and nutritional objectives are met.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivate and strengthen partnerships with schools and other program stakeholders.
  • Volunteer Oversight: Recruit, train, and oversee 40-50 weekly volunteers.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to food safety regulations and best practices.

More Than Food Program: The More Than Food program at COFB is designed to provide clients with individualized support and guidance, addressing challenges that extend beyond hunger. This initiative aims to empower clients by connecting them with vital resources and support within the community.

  • Program Development & Delivery: Plan, implement, and oversee “More Than Food” initiatives, including workshops, skill-building sessions, and support services such as financial literacy, nutrition education, mental health resources, and housing assistance.
  • Community Resource Centre: Assist clients in scheduling, confirming, and rescheduling appointments at the Resource Centre.
  • Client Navigation: Provide individual client navigation through our network of resources, ensuring clients are connected to appropriate services.
  • Partnerships & Community Collaboration: Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, government agencies, and service providers to expand program offerings.
  • Evaluation & Reporting: Monitor program outcomes and gather client feedback to ensure services effectively meet their needs.
  • Strategic Planning: Work with leadership to develop goals and strategies for expanding the “More Than Food” program.
