Description
Company Overview Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service. Overview Joby Aviation is seeking a motivated Composite Manufacturing Engineering Intern with a passion for composite fabrication and assembly processes. This internship offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in designing, developing, and optimizing composite manufacturing processes. As an intern, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design, production, tooling, and quality, to support innovative projects and learn from industry experts. This internship will be on-site at our Marina, CA location where the Joby aircraft is being manufactured. Responsibilities Process Documentation: Assist in creating and updating manufacturing documentation, including work instructions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for composite layup and assembly. Production Support: Provide technical support to production personnel on the shop floor to ensure the correct execution of manufacturing processes. Tooling & Shop Aids: Assist in the design and prototyping of shop aids and simple tooling to improve production efficiency. Process Improvement: Support lean manufacturing initiatives by collecting data on cycle times and identifying opportunities to reduce scrap and rework. Quality Support: Assist engineers in investigating non-conforming parts and identifying root causes for manufacturing issues. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with design and R&D teams to provide feedback on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for new composite components. Required Currently enrolled in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above Strong interest in composite materials and aerospace manufacturing. Familiarity with 3D CAD software (Solidworks, NX, or CATIA). Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and Bill of Materials (BOMs). Excellent problem-solving skills and a "hands-on" mindset. Strong verbal and written communication skills for authoring technical instructions. Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a manufacturing environment. Desired Hands-on experience with composite materials (hand layup, vacuum bagging, or autoclave curing) through university projects or prior internships. Experience with laser projection systems or composite cutting tables. Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles (5S, Kaizen). Previous experience in a prototype or professional manufacturing environment. Additional Information Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is for undergraduate students ($22.00 - $31.00/hr), and for graduate students ($5,550 - $7,800/month). The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Joby also offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, healthcare benefits, a 401(k) plan with a company match, an employee stock purchase plan (ESPP), short-term and long-term disability coverage, life insurance, and more. Joby is an Equal Opportunity Employer
