COMPOSITION TECHNICIAN

The Graphic Dimensions Composition Technician is required to use desktop publishing software to recreate business documents to be printed on variety production equipment. A technician must have knowledge and understanding of the terminology necessary for effective communication to complete your work and minimize waste and delays. Scanning, composition, proofreading, plating and sending proofs of your work are all daily activities. Assisting order entry and production to satisfy promised delivery dates and customer requirements is critical.

Responsibilities
  • Work with Desktop Publishing Software (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe

Acrobat, and Quark Xpress) to draw/recreate business documents as supplied by customer - including determining if artwork is of good quality and/or scannable Keyboarding (Typing) in copy.

  • Scanning in copy and touching up and correcting artwork
  • Knowing what is technically required in order to perform Imprinting of Checks, Prescription Pads, and Banking Documents as well as the Imaging of art files to metal plates for production. This may require troubleshooting machinery issues if plates are not performing properly in the pressroom.

Assist in all aspects of the prepress department.

  • Proofread all artwork before proofing to the customer or sending to production.
  • When preparing plate files for production - ask if unsure where something will be run.
  • Create back up files daily and copy them to our server.
  • Assist customers with technical questions pertaining to the artwork when needed. For example - low resolution jpg vs. vector art etc.
  • Assist with maintaining department resources - including month end inventory, restocking shelves, keeping production informed of what stock we are running low on and producing plates
  • If needed, assist with the maintenance of equipment - this includes cleaning of the plate processor, cleaning of the HP printers and calibrating the RIP for optimum performance and accuracy.
  • Additional tasks may be assigned to you by your supervisor as needed.
