JOB SUMMARY

Affinity is seeking a skilled Computer Network Technician to support the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of local and wide area networks (LAN/WAN), network equipment, and related systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing network upgrades, configuring firewalls, replacing switches, coordinating with vendors, and ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient operations. This role requires strong technical expertise, the ability to perform physical installation work, and flexibility to support after-hours cutovers to minimize operational disruptions. The successful candidate will work on the replacement and configuration of hardware in communication rooms throughout the Greater Vancouver Regional District.

EDUCATION

  • University degree or technical diploma in Communications Technology, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 4 years of recent experience in data networking.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with network equipment implementation, planning, site assessments, applying network standards, and troubleshooting.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Expertise in configuring, migrating, and troubleshooting network switches and firewalls.
  • Strong knowledge of LAN/WAN technologies, network protocols, routing, and firewall policies.
  • Proficiency in vendor coordination for circuit replacements and hardware deployment.
  • Familiarity with scripting for network administration tasks (e.g., shell scripting).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and installing equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, for production cutovers.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required for site visits.
Responsibilities

CORE NOC 22220 RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and administer local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), mainframe networks, workstations, Internet connections, and peripheral equipment.
  • Evaluate and install computer hardware, networking software, operating systems, and software applications.
  • Operate master consoles to monitor performance of computer systems and networks and coordinate access and usage.
  • Provide problem-solving services to network users.
  • Perform network start-up, shut-down, and maintain control records.
  • Perform data backups and disaster recovery operations.
  • Conduct tests and perform security and quality controls.
  • Perform shell scripting or other basic scripting tasks.
  • May supervise other network and web technicians.

SPECIALIZED DUTIES

  • Replace core and edge switches, ensuring accurate migration of configurations from legacy to new systems.
  • Configure routing, firewall, and NAT policies on internet firewalls.
  • Coordinate with vendors to replace legacy Metro circuits with new Carrier Ethernet (CE) circuits.
  • Support vendor activities including pre-field preparation, staging, and implementation for circuit replacements.
  • Coordinate decommissioning of legacy circuits with vendors.
  • Prepare sites for equipment installations, ensuring compliance with technical and safety standards.
  • Provide technical support for additional hardware components related to network upgrades.
  • Execute network implementation and production cutover services, primarily outside normal business hours, to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Perform physical labor associated with equipment installation (including lifting equipment up to 50 lbs).
