Description

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is the union that represents city letter carriers employed by the United States Postal Service. We are currently seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Computer Operator to support our Information Technology and Membership departments. This position offers a steady schedule and a supportive work environment.
Position Overview:
The Computer Operator is responsible for running scheduled and on-demand reports, managing data processing tasks on an IBM AS/400 system, and performing basic maintenance on peripheral equipment. This is a hands-on role that requires strong attention to detail, accuracy, and the ability to follow well-documented procedures.
Key Responsibilities:

Daily:

  • Run scheduled reports and labels
  • Load data tapes as requested
  • Ensure supplies such as paper, toner, and printer ribbons are replenished
  • Perform routine cleaning and minor maintenance of printers and tape drives
  • Other duties as assigned by the I.T. Director and Assistant Director of Membership

Weekly:

  • Process dues withholding
  • Handle special requests and COLCPE tape processing

Bi-Monthly:

  • Run bulletin tapes
  • Print and burst dues listings
  • Print and sign reimbursement checks for branches and states

Monthly:

  • Process Branch/Class, Dues Change, Vertex, and New Member tapes
  • Generate Postal Record tapes and labels
  • Conduct reconciliation for the Accounting Department
  • Load OPM tapes for retired membership processing

Quarterly & Bi-Yearly:

  • Process Activist and Retiree tapes, OPM dues
  • Assist with Per Capita Tax billing and State check reimbursements

Required Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of IBM AS/400 systems and peripherals
  • Strong attention to detail and accounting-related accuracy
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (paper boxes, PC hardware, monitors)
  • Patience and professionalism when addressing internal tech issues
  • Familiarity with Windows 9x or XP desktop operating systems (user-level knowledge)

Work Hours:
Monday – Friday | 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: From $40.49 per hour
Expected hours: 35 per week
