EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • University degree in social intervention or related field (asset);
  • Certification recognized by the Ministry and in good standing with the relevant professional order;
  • 3–5 years of experience as an addiction counselor (hospital and/or outpatient programs);
  • Experience in counseling individuals with trauma related to sexual abuse;
  • Group facilitation experience (asset);
  • Service planning experience (asset);
  • Personal and professional experience in intercultural contexts (strongly valued);
  • Prior experience in the field of addictions (asset).

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Ability to write reports, documents, and work plans;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook);
  • Strong autonomy and ability to work effectively within a team;
  • Flexibility to work outside of normal office hours;
  • Proficiency in English (mandatory);
  • Knowledge of Inuktitut (asset);
  • Knowledge of French (asset);
  • Willingness to undergo a criminal record check.
Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE

In this context, the Counselor plays a crucial role in promoting the Isuarsivik Regional Recovery Centre as a culturally sensitive space, offering distinctive and adapted programs to address dependencies and intergenerational trauma. The Counselor is also responsible for providing individual and group counseling, preparing and leading group session, and documenting guest activities—thus contributing significantly to the mission and impact of the Centre.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Recovery Counselor plays a central role in welcoming, supporting, and following up with clients at the Centre. Responsibilities are structured around four main areas:

  • Client Intake and Support
  • Participate in the admission process, prepare welcome kits, and complete intake steps for assigned clients upon arrival.
  • Assess withdrawal phases and report any concerns to the supervisor.
  • Support clients in identifying issues, setting goals, and developing follow-up plans.
  • Administer medications according to established protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with house rules, encourage program participation, and intervene when concerns or incidents arise.
  • Conduct regular room checks to ensure cleanliness and the absence of prohibited substances.
  • Case Management and Clinical Follow-up
  • Create and maintain client files for assigned cases.
  • Record continuous observations on client behavior, attitudes, activities, and progress throughout their stay.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times, including proper destruction of files as per established procedures.
  • Group Facilitation and Activities
  • Prepare spaces, materials, and activities required for each new cycle.
  • Provide program-related information and ensure content is understood by clients.
  • Observe, participate in, and actively contribute to group discussions and counseling sessions.
  • Plan, implement, and facilitate group activities that support client recovery.
  • Provide or coordinate guest transportation when required.
  • Teamwork and Organizational Contribution
  • Participate in daily clinical team meetings and share observations with colleagues.
  • Contribute, as needed, to the Centre’s fundraising activities.
  • Complete and submit incident reports to the Program Coordinator.
  • Safeguard confidentiality regarding staff and guests.
  • Remain available throughout the cycle and perform any other related duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator.
