As we grow, we’re seeking a dedicated construction engineering technician who can support our executive management team and help us maximize our project procurement and project management effectiveness.

POSITION OVERVIEW

BBS is seeking an Engineering Technician (ET) who will work closely with the BBS management team to align project engineering and design requirements with materials procurement and construction activities and schedules. The role includes reviewing bid packages and project plans to identify critical questions or issues for RFIs, quote development, materials procurement and construction processes. The ET will coordinate with project managers and BBS onsite supervisors to ensure that the technical requirements of a project are being addressed. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced construction environment, takes initiative, anticipates needs, and demonstrates both discretion and professionalism. The ET will work closely with senior leadership to ensure projects are properly quoted, start successfully, remain on track, and are completed “per specs.” The ET ensures that technical communication is clear, and that building operations align with the “BBS Way.”

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Engineering Tech Diploma or Engineering Degree in civil engineering, construction engineering, or Architectural Technology, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years experience in residential and/or commercial construction.
  • Ability to read blueprints, construction plans, and project documents in fine detail to extract critical information.
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and regulations.
  • Experience in collaborating with project managers and onsite construction leaders.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; confident communicator across various audiences.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills, and ability to anticipate project needs.
  • Strong time management and prioritization abilities and comfort with changing priorities and schedules.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Tech-savvy and comfortable learning new platforms
  • Professional certifications, licenses, designations, etc., are a plus.
Responsibilities
  • Project Planning and Design Review:
  • Review and analyse blueprints, specifications, and other design documents for feasibility and constructability in remote building locations and within the BBS Way.
  • Review all proposed building plans and identify any unique building process and product requirements that are outside the norms of the BBS Way.
  • In consultation with BBS team members, propose alternate solutions, if available, to accomplish the intended design and construction outcomes within the BBS Way.
  • Prepare RFI documents to address design questions, building materials specifications and/or construction method challenges found in the building plan reviews.
  • Participate in RFI meetings with clients, and their architects and engineers, and other stakeholders to understand project requirements.
  • Collaborate with architects, clients, and other stakeholders throughout the project stages - design, project preparation, and project execution to ensure clear project communication and expectations.
  • Building Materials Selection and Procurement Support
  • Lead materials take-off activities for each project.
  • Identify unique building processes and product requirements in each set of building plans and advise the project managers and the procurement team of these requirements.
  • As directed by the procurement team assist in sourcing unique or custom building products
  • Project Management Support:
  • Advise BBS project managers of any project lead time or supply chain constraints in the development of project delivery plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Review and analyse change order requests from clients for feasibility and constructability in remote building locations and within the BBS Way.
  • Draft BBS change order documents for approval by project managers.
  • Manage change order documents and other construction-in-process documents to ensure that up-to-date documents are properly filed and available to all BBS internal users.
  • Assist project managers with technical questions from subcontractors, suppliers, and BBS on-site personnel.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, building codes, and company policies.
  • Monitor building progress to ensure compliance to building code, technical and product requirements of the project, quality, and adherence to plans.
  • Join project site visits as assigned.
  • Risk Assessment and Management:
  • Identify potential BBS Way risks within proposed building plans and recommend alternative building products, building processes or mitigation strategies.
  • Respond to unforeseen challenges and collaborate with project managers and BBS onsite supervisors to develop corrective actions.
  • Ensure all necessary permits, work orders, change orders and approvals are obtained (and signed) and that work scopes conform to the approved documents
  • Reporting and Documentation:
  • Maintain accurate and detailed project technical records including, project plan review reports, RFI documents and responses, BBS procurement requirements, unique project products and processes, etc.
  • Ensure that up-to-date building plans, change orders, specification documents, and other project and design documents, etc., are properly filed and available to all BBS internal users. (BBS’s current electronic filing systems: Buildertrend, Google Docs).
  • Prepare and provide regular reports on project preparation and planning status, especially project specific technical details.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • This is a highly collaborative role working with the BBS management team, BBS field team leaders, community representatives and external project consultants. This includes:
  • Foster effective communication and collaboration among all project stakeholders.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, regulatory bodies, and BBS internal teams.
  • Participate in regular project meetings with BBS project managers and stakeholders to discuss project progress, issues, and solutions.
