Description

A Supervisor’s day-to-day duties and responsibilities may vary, but there are many core tasks associated with the role, which include:

  • Managing Projects.
  • Following Blueprints, Specifications, and Drawings.
  • Supervising and Assisting Crew Members.
  • Preparing and Installing Concrete.
  • Daily Reports and Documentation.
  • Must be able to operate heavy machinery and possess a valid drivers license.

The Supervisor is a professional who oversees and offers direction to people working on the construction site, as well as performing the physical labour that is necessary when needed. The main responsibility is ensuring that the construction work is completed safely, on time and on budget.
Effective supervision requires a wide variety of skills, such as people skills (human resources, leadership, communication, teamwork, conflict resolution, coaching), and technical skills (understanding drawings and specifications, understanding the scope of work and the means and methodology, planning, and delegation).

SKILLS/ABILITIES/REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent preferred
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Foreman or Construction Supervisor in the construction industry
  • A Valid Driver’s license is required.
  • Understanding of safety procedures and recognition of hazards
  • A positive attitude and willingness to direct co-workers
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, specifications, and construction documents is a must.
  • Understanding of concrete restoration techniques and experience in the concrete restoration industry is preferred.
  • Time management skills
  • Knowledge of appropriate materials, methods, and the tools required in various construction processes.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to document crew activities, job progress, timekeeping, and safety reporting.
  • Possess organizational skills to plan the activities of others, and to manage and participate in meetings with workers and other on-site personnel.
  • Possess strong Supervision and delegation skills.
  • Respect diversity - treat others with respect.
  • Will be required to perform the work with crew on smaller scale projects (Working Supervisor)
  • A valid drivers’ license is required.

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Use of Personal Protection Equipment required (hard-hat, safety boots, etc.)
  • Often works in conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust.
  • Work can be physically strenuous.
  • Lifting, pulling, standing, crouching for extended periods of time.
  • Work at high elevations (scaffold, swing stages) and in confined spaces
  • Manual dexterity required.
  • Performance of repetitive tasks
  • Interacts with employees, management, and the public at large.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Work for extended hours and available for work 7 days a week as required.

Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES

  • Be on the construction site to ensure that standards and specifications are met.
  • Regularly perform labour work as needed.
  • Champion and maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by adhering to and enforcing safety legislation, standards, and company policies.
  • Lead, organize, direct and control activities and people on the job site.
  • Work with Project Managers on the construction site to determine the working priorities.
  • Provide directions to and monitor the activities of subcontractors to ensure compliance with specifications, schedule, safety, and procedures.
  • Assist with and follow schedules.
  • Prepare/review reports and forecasts, including summary of construction progress, job labour forecasts.
  • Determine work methods that improve efficiency and productivity in the workplace.
  • Anticipate potential problems and analyze and recommend solutions or corrective actions.
  • Keep project management informed of project status, highlighting deviations from plans.
  • Submit timesheets and safety documentation in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that the construction work is completed within projected deadlines and adhere to the set budget.
  • Manage and develop labour force, including assessment of individual competencies, understanding employment standards, building a respectful workplace, managing the progressive discipline process, and conflict resolution.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with all stakeholders (Project Managers, Engineers, Owners, Customers, Staff, and Public)
  • Responsible for upkeep and inventory of equipment, vehicles, tools, materials on the jobsite
  • Understand and interpret plans, drawings, and specifications.
