SMG is seeking a Construction Permit Coordinator / HSE Support Specialist in the Indianapolis, Indiana area. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting health, safety, and environmental (HSE) initiatives, ensuring that construction activities comply with all applicable safety regulations and site-specific requirements. Key Responsibilities Prepare and issue work permits, including Hot Work, Confined Space Entry (CSE), Trenching, and Safe Work permits. Monitor active work areas during the duration of open permits to ensure ongoing compliance. Conduct jobsite safety and compliance observations and document findings on time. Facilitate corrective actions when safety concerns or non-compliance issues are identified. Participate in and represent the contractor or Owner during progress and safety meetings. Ensure all permits are aligned with ongoing construction activities and regulatory requirements. Promote and support HSE programs by conducting job hazard analyses and identifying risk mitigation strategies. Verify and enforce compliance with local, state, federal, and Owner-specific safety standards and protocols. Work collaboratively with contractors, subcontractors, and internal teams to uphold a strong safety culture Requirements Minimum of 5 years of experience in construction, general industry, environmental, or safety permitting background. OSHA 30 – Construction Certification is required within 30 days of hire date. Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field (preferred) In-depth understanding of Confined Space, Hot Work, and general permitting requirements and procedures Excellent verbal and written communication skills Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail Ability to work some weekends or flexible hours as required by project demands Preferred Qualifications Experience with large-scale construction projects Familiarity with site auditing software or digital permit systems Strong leadership and interpersonal skills in diverse team environments Physical Demands of the job may include Moving about long distances Ascending/descending stairs and ladders Remaining in a stationary position for a prolonged period Working in extreme weather Being exposed to loud noises Wearing personal protective gear correctly Join an elite group of Safety Professionals!
