JOB SUMMARY

Helix Contracting is a small to medium sized general contractor working in the Industrial, Commercial and Institutional (ICI) industry.
Our customers are municipal, provincial and federal governments throughout Ontario.
We are looking for individuals that possesses strong leadership skills, willing to travel to different job sites within North Western Ontario and complete the following duties.
We are currently seeking a dependable, hardworking, highly skilled carpenter/supervisor to join our team. You will work with the project manager to construct, install, and renovate various types of buildings in the Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional construction fields. We are seeking a candidate willing to work a rotation of 3 weeks on 1 week off in remote locations, camp-like conditions.

CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS & CONSTRUCTION SKILLS

  • Understands the means and methods of construction associated with the renovation of commercial and institutional buildings typical throughout Canada
  • Has a working knowledge of civil, architectural, mechanical, and electrical work
  • Understands the sequencing of work and the strategy of creating effective project schedules
  • Understands how to effectively staff self-performed work activities to achieve levels of productivity that meet or exceed industry norms
  • Has the ability to understand the function and purpose of the final product
  • Uses the knowledge to challenge the appropriateness of the work in progress
  • Cut, shape, and smooth lumber and other material (e.g. drywall, fiberglass board, metal framing) according to measurements
  • Build window frames, doors, staircases, frame buildings, and other structures by using raw materials or pre-constructed items

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a carpentry program at a vocational school or carpentry apprenticeship is an asset
  • 3+ years of professional carpentry experience
  • Strong working knowledge of carpentry techniques and methods, including installation and construction
  • Proficient in using hand tools as well as measurement tools
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Good physical condition, stamina, and dexterity

Responsibilities
  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches and understand project specifications (architectural, structural, MEP, and/or sketches). Verify field measurements and trueness of structure
  • Comply with all company and governmental safety guidelines
  • Ensuring that all projects are performed in accordance with contractual and quality standards
  • Scheduling and directing the daily activities of work and taking necessary action to assure that the project objectives of cleanliness, safety, price, schedule, quality, and process are met
  • Maintaining daily paperwork such as timecards, field reports, schedule updates, and E-mail correspondence to keep the various people involved with the project informed of important issues
  • Implementing incremental project schedules that make sure upcoming events are on track and are being proactively attended to
  • Promoting and maintaining a culture that values safety, health, and cleanliness
  • Conducting and/or attending pre-construction, progress, and other project and staff meetings.
  • Participating in training and other forms of continuous improvement initiatives.
