We are seeking to recruit highly motivated and clinically focussed individuals as Consultants in Adult Emergency Medicine. The successful candidates will join our existing team of 21 consultants. The team are committed to improving and advancing the quality of Emergency Care and deliver excellent training available locally and nationally. The successful candidate will work within a well-established and supportive multidisciplinary team. You will be based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary Adult ED, part of University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW).
UHBW is one of the busiest EDs in the South West, seeing 80,000 adults per year. The ED attendances at the BRI are of high acuity and reflect the broad spectrum attending an inner-city ED, with an average of 220 attendances per day. UHBW also serves as a large tertiary referral centre for many specialities such as cardiology and cardiac surgery with 24-hour Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI)available and operating as a Cardiac Arrest Centre. BRI ED is a Trauma Unit part of the Severn Major Trauma Network (SMTN), which coordinates Major Trauma services across the former Avon area as well as parts of Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. We have fantastic working relationships across our Urgent Care teams, working dynamically across all the assessment units (Acute Medical Unit, Older Persons Assessment Unit and Surgical Trauma Assessment Unit and Same Day Emergency Care Units to deliver excellent care at the front door.
Our ED is an academic department teaching medical students, and all members of the MDT including HSTs, ACPs, EPs, CESR, ACCS, GPSTs and Clinical Fellows. The Emergency Department has recently scored consistently ‘Good/Excellent’ for Higher Specialist Training and ‘Excellent’ for GP Training. We have also come a respectable 9th across the country for patient experience (GMC).
University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England. UHBW has been rated by the CQC as ‘Good’ overall and our staff are proud to deliver excellent care to the people of Bristol, Weston and beyond. As a forward- thinking multi-award winning Trust and a digital exemplar committed to improving patient care, our world-leading research and innovations are having a positive local and global impact. Our hospitals are spread across Bristol and Weston, join us and you can enjoy the very best of both worlds; city living within a stone’s throw of the countryside or beside the seaside, both with easy access to all that the South West has to offer. UHBW is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. As an equal opportunities employer actively working towards a diverse workforce we aim to recruit and retain a workforce which represents the rich diversity of the local population at all levels and are committed to designing our services around the needs of individual patients and those around them. Anonymous information will be used from your application in order to ensure we’re meeting our pledge.
BRI ED has an established and integrated Global Health program within the department, through a collaboration with our own hosted charity “Dharura: Global Emergency Care”. This provides our team the opportunity to engage in Global Health opportunities within our range of global partnerships, as well as support and progress our own Global Nursing and Medical Fellowship programs. The program looks to promote reciprocal development between ourselves and global partners to mutually benefit staff from UHBW and our partner institutions, whilst maintaining the highest standards of ethics and governance, allowing our staff to sustain a global perspective of healthcare within their careers.
We have strong links with Bristol Community Emergency Medicine Service. CEMS was introduced in 2024 in partnership with South Western Ambulance Service (SWAST), hosted by UHBW to reduce hospital conveyances, enabling care to be delivered in the community rather than in hospital. There is an opportunity for consultants to be involved with CEMS.
We also work closely with our Urgent Care colleagues at Bristol Childrens Hospital, Weston General Hospital and North Bristol NHS Trust i in the newly formed Bristol NHS Group, to deliver seamless, high-quality, and equitable care for every person across Bristol, Weston, South Gloucestershire, and the wider South West.
We run an active research programme which appointees would be afforded the opportunity to participate in (current projects include CRASH 4, Dexcacell and EMAR – National Airways Registry)
