JOB SUMMARY AND QUALIFICATIONS

Job Summary:
This position will primarily support the Db2 Z/os & LUW database platform
Consulting Database Administrators (CDBA) are consulting level contributors within our Data Management organization. A CDBA is an expert with strong previous experience across the database and deep working knowledge of the entire IT stack. They have an essential role in the overall Data Strategy at HCA Healthcare and support mission critical applications across the enterprise.
As a CDBA, you will have the opportunity to grow and leverage your technical skills in database architecture, design, administration, engineering and tuning to manage our database environments. A CDBA will work with other database administrators, system reliability engineers, technicians, business analysts, and business owners to implement solutions that improve database reliability for end-users.

As such, the Consulting Database Administrator focuses primarily on tasks and activities that:

  • Provide technical support of database environments including software installation, database creation, upgrades, patches, problem diagnosis, performance monitoring, maintenance, process automation, evaluation, and tuning recommendations
  • Contribute to application development in all aspects of database integration including the deployment of requested database code and configuration changes, as well as reviewing SQL statements and guiding developers on best practices around how to interact with the database
  • Maintain a Highly Available database environment through the implementation and support of backup and restore capabilities, data replication, Disaster Recovery procedures and exercises, and failover to standby databases
  • Review project requests to estimate time, cost, and infrastructure required to successfully deliver the desired outcomes
  • Research, architect, and implement database technologies using industry and HCA best practices
  • Optimize database resources for optimum configuration, database performance, and cost
  • Continuously identify process improvement opportunities, including the reduction of manual tasks and elimination of human error through automation, as well as streamlining work activities
  • Participate in On-Call rotation and during shifts provide Tier 3 off-hours support of critical systems for database problem resolution and recovery

CDBAs are expected to have a great deal of prior knowledge and experience, and will need to demonstrate the ability to learn quickly and thrive in a team-oriented environment. While in this position, they are expected to showcase experience in the design, development, maintenance, and administration of the database platform. The culture of our organization places an emphasis on teamwork, so social and interpersonal skills are equally important as technical capability.
