JOB DESCRIPTION

The Smart Metering Implementation Programme is looking for a highly motivated Grade 7 policy professional to work in our Consumer Policy team.
Our work ensures smart metering benefits reach all GB consumers, driving a smart and flexible energy system to deliver Clean Power by 2030. We’re looking for a driven individual with an interest in energy policy and consumer engagement, who is looking to develop their career in this exciting area. We work collaboratively across DESNZ and with a range of external partners to encourage smart meter uptake and safeguard consumer interests.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

This post is suitable for a policy professional with experience delivering quality policy outcomes.You will lead detailed and interlinked policy areas and will need to quickly familiarise yourself with complex issues and work collaboratively across team boundaries to develop options and recommendations.

We are looking for candidates who can:

  • Maintain effective performance under time pressure. You should be comfortable developing policy proposals from an early stage and adapting approaches to respond to wider changes in the policy landscape or consumer experience issues.
  • Establish positive relationships with both internal and external partners, developing trust and influencing partners to build consensus. In this role, you will have opportunities to develop and present solutions, communicating effectively to secure support from senior leaders.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading policy to design and implement measures to support smart meter uptake among key consumer groups, including those who may experience barriers to acceptance. This will involve developing and reviewing options, building consensus and securing support for policy proposals and engagement approaches across a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to deliver effective outcomes.
  • Monitoring outcomes from existing consumer protection policy, responding to emerging issues and ensuring smart metering benefits reach all consumers. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating ongoing assessment of energy supplier performance, seeing opportunities for sharing good practice and addressing risks.
  • Providing strategic direction and oversight of the Secretariat for the Programme’s Consumer Reference Group chaired by the team’s Deputy Director.
  • Building and managing relationships with external organisations representing consumer interests, retaining their support for smart metering and influencing them to deliver consumer benefits.
  • As a line manager, supporting the wellbeing, personal and professional development of one SEO and activity manage other SEO and HEO members of the team.
