JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Customer Service Support Manger this position performs a variety of technical and inspection support to park and open space areas as well as park maintenance programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Graduation from a recognized, two-year, post-secondary horticulture program.
  • Five years’ current experience in parks and open space maintenance.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Drivers Licence and the ability to use a personal vehicle for travel between worksites.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating safe driving record.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid first aid certificate.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of soils, turf, and weeds as they relate to the repair, establishment and maintenance of parks and open space areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, to species and cultivar, plant material used in parks and open spaces.
  • Ability to interpret landscape plans, as-built drawings and maps.
  • Knowledge of The Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of equipment used in parks and open space maintenance.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including Microsoft Office software. Experience in the use of Enterprise Resource Planning and Learning Management System software (SAP).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, contractors and the public.
  • Ability to establish and enforce work standards including safe conduct on the job.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including outdoors in adverse weather conditions.

Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $35.24 to $38.85 CAD per hour (2025 rates)

Responsibilities

Typical Duties

  • Provides technical, administrative and inspection support to all aspects of park and open space development and maintenance programs and ensures these services conform to specifications, safety policies, work procedures, departmental policies, and related legislation and guidelines.
  • Monitors invoices to ensure they accurately reflect the work completed and that expenditures are within approved budgets.
  • Assists with the development of contract specifications and ensures that the park and open space inventory accurately reflects the work that will be performed.
  • Provides customer service on behalf of the Parks Department regarding park access requests from residents and contractors.
  • Supervises staff involved in the inspection of park and open space areas.
  • Investigates and responds to enquiries from the public, civic departments and Parks Department staff and proposes mutually agreeable solutions to problems.
  • Maintains records related to parks and open space inspection services using a computerized system
  • Ensures that all contractors adhere to all Corporate and Department policies, procedures, standards and relevant legislation.
  • Acts as a liaison with other Parks Department staff, contractors and other Corporate staff to coordinate work activities. Communicates regularly with internal staff, contractors, engineers, other government and regulatory agencies and the public as required to schedule and coordinate work.
  • Communicates with management on work progress and advises on problems that occur in the field.
  • Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon’s Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
