We are seeking a permanent Control Studies Engineer to join our System Performance Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of six years of related experience

in power system studies, control circuits, protection and power system analysis.

  • Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a

specified amount of time.

  • Working knowledge of power systems including AC controls, steady state, small signal and transient stability behaviour and

HVdc controls.

  • Familiarity with power system equipment, AC system and AC generator controls, HVDC controls and their functions in the

power system.

  • Knowledge and demonstrated competency of power system simulation tools such as PSS/E, DSATools (VSAT, TSAT, SSAT,

and PSAT), PSCAD and RTDS, and general technical knowledge of their application to Manitoba Hydro and surrounding

power systems.

  • Possess a willingness to learn, shows initiative and mature judgement with the ability to make and implement sound decisions

guidelines and standard requirements.

  • Perform comprehensive system restoration (blackstart) studies and prepare guidelines for system restoration.
  • Initiate, plan, coordinate, conduct and/or direct system tests as required to help determine actual system behaviour an
Responsibilities
  • Perform PSS/E, DSATools (VSAT, TSAT, SSAT, and PSAT), PSCAD, RSCAD/RTDS and other related loadflow and stability
    studies for ac generator controls and controls associated with the southern and northern ac systems as well as the HVdc

Bipoles.

  • Prepare reports, commissioning procedures and guidelines and liaise with other departments, divisions and outside agencies

for safe, secure and economic operation of the AC systems and HVdc links.

  • Conduct, and/or direct technical studies, computer modelling, simulation, and field tests related to Manitoba Hydro control

settings, to ensure the reliable operation of the power system.

  • Perform study model validation and relevant studies and testing to ensure compliance with NERC and MRO generator testing

guidelines and standard requirements.

  • Perform comprehensive system restoration (blackstart) studies and prepare guidelines for system restoration.
  • Initiate, plan, coordinate, conduct and/or direct system tests as required to help determine actual system behaviour and

benchmark system models accordingly.

  • Be an active contributor and provide technical support to generator and ac controls commissioning teams during installation of

new generator controls, ac controls and HVdc equipment.

  • Prepare reports and technical memos recommending system improvements and control and protection modifications based

on the analysis of system disturbances.
