Description
Description Accounting • Financial Reporting • Systems & Controls | Boston, MA (on-site) Company: Polkadog Position: Controller Reports To: CEO Type: Full-time, Leadership team Salary Range: $150,000-$190,000 / year, depending on experience The Role Polkadog is a beloved Boston brand, founded in 2004 and now backed for serious growth. As Controller, you will own the financial backbone of the business — our books, our close, our controls, and the systems and reporting that leadership relies on to make decisions. This is a build role: you’ll take a founder-built company that is professionalizing and put real accounting infrastructure underneath it. What You'll Own The books. Own the general ledger and the integrity of our financial records across all entities and channels — retail stores, wholesale, and Amazon. The monthly close. Run an accurate, on-time monthly close — journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and the discipline that lets us trust our numbers. Financial statements & reporting. Produce timely financial statements and the management reporting leadership uses to run the business, including results by channel. Financial Systems. Own our accounting systems (Quickbooks Online) and the integration between accounting and operations (we run Fishbowl for inventory). Internal controls. Design and maintain the internal controls, policies, and procedures that protect the business — building the discipline a growing company needs. Cash, AP & AR. Own cash management, accounts payable, and accounts receivable — keeping cash flow visible and obligations current. Inventory & cost accounting. Partner with operations on inventory valuation and cost accounting so margins and landed cost are accurate and trusted. Compliance. Own sales tax, regulatory filings, and the year-end audit / tax preparation, working with our outside accountants. Budgeting & forecasting. Support the annual budget and ongoing forecasting, giving leadership clear visibility into performance against plan. Who You Are & What We Hope You Bring A seasoned accountant. A proven track record in accounting and financial reporting, with experience owning a full-cycle monthly close and producing financial statements. CPA and/or public accounting experience is a strong plus. A systems builder. You don’t just operate accounting systems — you improve them. Experience implementing or optimizing accounting/ERP systems, and comfort with the data plumbing between operations and finance. Controls-minded. You instinctively build structure, policies, and controls, and you bring order to environments that are growing fast. Manufacturing / inventory savvy. Experience with inventory-based or manufacturing businesses and cost accounting is a big plus. Hands-on and trusted. Comfortable being the person who does the work and the person leadership trusts with the numbers — happy in the details and in front of leadership. Energized by a growing business. You like a fast-moving, founder-built company that is professionalizing, and you want to help build the finance function rather than inherit a finished one. Education. Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field — or equivalent hands-on experience. CPA preferred. What Success Looks Like in Year One A reliable, on-time monthly close that leadership can count on — not a scramble. Financial statements and channel-level reporting leadership can manage to with confidence. Accounting systems and controls that are documented, scalable, and integrated with operations. Trusted inventory and margin numbers, built in partnership with operations. Why Join Polkadog A brand people love. Join a Boston institution that pet owners are passionate about, now backed for serious growth. Real ownership. You’ll build the finance function, not babysit it — your work directly shapes how the company grows. A seat at the table. Report to the CEO and help set the direction of the business as part of the leadership team. Ready to apply? Tell us a little about yourself and why this role caught your eye — we read every application. Polkadog is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes candidates of all backgrounds.
