WHO WE ARE

The Mikisew Cree First Nation (Mikisew) has lived on the ancestral lands of the Athabasca Delta and Wood Buffalo National Park in northeastern Alberta since time immemorial. The lives of our members are linked to the land and to a close understanding of traditions, history and a natural way of life. Many of our members live in the hamlet of Fort Chipewyan, and our traditional lands range over a large portion of Athabasca oil sands deposits. For nearly 30 years, Mikisew Group, our wholly owned business arm, has worked toward the long-term, sustainable economic progress of our Nation and its members through employment and significant investments in education, training, social programs and infrastructure.

WHO YOU ARE

Mikisew is currently seeking a dedicated and compassionate experienced Controller to join the Finance team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will be responsible for the general accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable/collection, payroll, risk management, supervising and supporting the Finance staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Undergraduate degree or advanced diploma in finance, accounting, or a related field.
• Minimum 5 years experience working with First Nations is considered an asset and 3 years of supervisory experience.
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office, familiarity with Xyntax and Sage software is an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, time management, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently on routine tasks and as part of a team.
• Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
• Valid class 5 driver’s license and current clear criminal record check.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Possess a valid Class 5 AB driver’s license and own or access to a vehicle.
• Willingness and ability to reside in Fort Chipewyan and also to travel as required by business needs.
• Willingness and ability to work after hours and/or weekends when required.
• Willingness to submit to an Oath of Confidentiality.
• Willing to work flexible schedule. Combination of working remotely, in-office, and at community locations.
• Must provide and possess a clear criminal record vulnerable sector check.
• Ability to speak and/or understand the Cree language (or another applicable First Nation language) would be an asset but not required

• Perform monthly closing and prepare income statements and costing reports.
• Prepare entries to general ledger accounts and document business transactions.
• Reconcile bank accounts and all other balance sheet accounts.
• Maintain and ensure proper use of all accounting control procedures.
• Review and control budgets for Government funding, contracts and mortgages.
• Review accounting and related system reports for accuracy and completeness.
• Review budget, revenue, expense, payroll entries, invoices, and other accounting documents.
• Analyze revenue and expenditure trends and recommend appropriate budget levels and work with Director to ensure expenditure control.
• Explain billing invoices and accounting policies to staff, vendors and clients.
• Resolve accounting discrepancies.
• Maintain databases and manual filing systems.
• Supervise the input and handling of financial data for the accounting system.
• Interact with the external auditors for audit completion.
• Other duties as assigned.
