Job Summary: The Controller is responsible for leading the organization’s accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls in support of a fast-growing company. This role ensures accurate and timely financial reporting, strong compliance, and disciplined cost management across project-based and field-intensive operations. The Controller partners closely with Finance, Operations, HR, and Executive Leadership to support profitability, scalability, and operational excellence. Responsibilities/Essential Functions: Financial Reporting & Accounting 1. Lead all accounting functions, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation. 2. Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. 3. Ensure accurate revenue recognition and cost accounting for project-based and service contracts. 4. Maintain consistent accounting policies and procedures across operating segments. Project & Cost Accounting 5. Oversee project accounting for construction, maintenance, and operations work, including job cost tracking, EAC, POC revenue recognition, margin analysis, and variance reporting. 6. Partner with Operations and Project Management to improve visibility into labor, travel, equipment, and subcontractor costs. 7. Support forecasting and accrual processes to ensure timely recognition of committed costs. Internal Controls & Compliance 8. Design, implement, and maintain strong internal controls to support audit readiness and risk mitigation. 9. Coordinate annual financial audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting requirements. 10. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including multi-state operations considerations. Leadership & Team Development 11. Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement. 12. Establish clear roles, workflows, and performance expectations within the accounting function. 13. Partner cross-functionally with HR, Payroll, and Benefits teams to ensure accurate labor cost and benefits accounting. 14. Actively participate in and, as needed, lead discussions on financial accounting, annual audit and other related topics with the company’s executive team, Board of Directors and Audit Committee. Systems & Process Improvement 15. Drive process improvements and automation within accounting and reporting systems (ERP, job costing, timekeeping, expense management). 16. Play an active role in development, utilization and enhancement of the company’s ERP and financial systems to ensure they support operations, budgeting and forecasting and company growth. 17. Support financial dashboards and KPIs to support executive decision-making. Strategic Partnership 18. Act as a trusted business partner to the CFO and executive team, providing insights on financial performance, margins, and growth opportunities. 19. Support budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning. 20. Assist with integration of new business lines, acquisitions, or geographic expansion. 21. Travel as required and perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope of the role. Requirements Education & Experience Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibility. Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting standards. Experience with project-based accounting in construction, energy, infrastructure, or field services environments. ASC 606 and 842 experience. Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex, multi-entity accounting structures. ERP implementation experience highly preferred. Ability to travel as required. Work Environment/Physical Requirements: The physical demands of are generally light and primarily aligned with office-based work unless visiting operational facilities/sites. Specific requirements include: Extended periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer or other digital devices. Frequent use of hands for typing, writing, and handling office equipment. Occasional walking during on-site visits to different areas within the organization. Active listening and clear speech are essential for effectively supporting and coaching leaders and employees.
