JOB SUMMARY

The construction controller must coordinate all the facets involved in a construction project. Besides monitoring the actual construction process, the construction controller works within a budgetary limit to ensure that the project completes on time and on budget.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Completed Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent diploma
  • CPA designation is a must
  • 5-10 years of progressive accounting experience including completion of financial statements with supporting schedules
  • Experience working in a construction or real estate business
  • Experience with asset-based lending reporting
  • Ability to work to and meet various deadlines
  • Ability to deal with stressful and difficult situations
  • Ability to appropriately communicate confidential information
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Ontario

Responsibilities
  • Oversee the day-to-day accounting operations of the company, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Manage the general ledger, month-end and year-end closing processes, and all journal entries.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Generate and distribute quarterly investor reports, including financial summaries, project updates, and investment performance metrics.
  • Monitor cash flow and manage bank reconciliations, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and job costing.
  • Utilize and maintain the NewStar accounting system, ensuring data accuracy, system integrity, and process optimization.
  • Support the budgeting and forecasting process, working closely with project managers and senior leadership.
  • Maintain and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with external accountants for year-end audit and tax filings.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to support strategic decision-making.
  • Assist with the implementation and improvement of accounting policies, procedures, and systems.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, ensuring high performance and development.
  • Manage the job costing process with creating jobs, cost codes and assisting with project budgeting process
  • Performing job cost analysis, margin analysis and project variance analysis and liaise with project managers to track project costs and ensure all costs are recorded for monthly closings.
  • Assisting in activities concerned with the reporting and control of the construction processes and interacting with all the internal divisions of the company and the partners, senior management, investors & other stakeholders.
  • Analyzing constructional information for producing forecasts about businesses, economic and industry conditions for undertaking construction activity.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and construction industry standards.
