Job Title: Financial Controller
Location: Jersey City, NJ – Fully on-site for first 90 days, then work from home on Fridays
Salary: $150,000 – $170,000 + 5–10% discretionary bonus

POSITION OVERVIEW

Our client, a well-established real estate firm, is seeking a Financial Controller to lead financial planning, accounting operations, and reporting for the organization and its partners. This leadership role involves managing monthly closes, billing, accounts receivable/payable, property budget preparation, and coordinating audits and tax filings with external CPA firms. The Controller will play a key role in improving policies, procedures, and systems to enhance efficiency, reduce reporting timelines, and maintain the highest standards of financial integrity.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Detail-oriented with a track record of meeting deadlines and producing high-quality work.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax, financial reporting, data analysis, and forecasting.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities in a structured and organized manner.
  • Collaborative team player with strong prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Yardi software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to work effectively across all levels of the organization and with external partners.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Experience in analyzing financial data to provide actionable business recommendations.
  • Knowledge of the real estate sector, including construction, commercial, and multi-family properties.
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

EXPERIENCE

  • 10–15 years of progressive experience in real estate management.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • Public accounting audit experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the monthly financial close process, billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash flow management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial reports; present and communicate results to internal teams and partners.
  • Assist in creating annual property budgets and forecasts.
  • Prepare supporting documentation for monthly financials, property budgets, audits, and tax returns.
  • Develop, document, and maintain effective internal controls.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, shorten reporting cycles, and ensure data accuracy.
  • Supervise accounting staff and oversee Yardi usage for general ledger functions.
  • Establish and manage the company’s financial reporting IT systems.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and partner reporting standards.
  • Perform additional tasks and special projects as assigned.
