By May 4, 2026, applicants must have completed at least their first year of study in a post-secondary program/Technical Institute (see job posting).    Summary  The Controls Engineering Intern in Calgary, AB will report to the Drilling Engineering Manager and support the team with several key projects:  Validate outputs from Machine Learning initiatives by comparing results to actual datasets.  Make recommendations for areas in which models can be improved, and which changes may be needed Compile and validate data from real-time alerts.  Organize and document feedback from the Performance Drilling Team and make recommendations for improving logic that automatically detects various conditions on all operating rigs Assist Drilling Solutions Team with building new tools for analyzing and visualizing high-frequency (1000Hz) downhole dynamics datasets Feature engineering for use in Machine Learning Initiatives across the company The successful candidate will be expected to learn and demonstrate the following:  The role of a rig’s control and process control systems, including the function of all major pieces of equipment involved, and how the driller (operator) interacts with the system  The role AutoDrillers (PI controller) play in on-bottom drilling operations, and how to utilize them for maximizing performance and reducing downtime  Effectively collaborate within a diverse and multidisciplinary team, proficiently communicate with colleagues with different backgrounds  Clearly document all work, with an emphasis on standardizing processes and workflows for others  Prepare and deliver a final presentation Knowledge & Skills Demonstrates a strong analytical mindset with an aptitude for forward-thinking and problem-solving  Motivated, collaborative, organized, and able to manage multiple tasks & sub-projects  Shows solid interpersonal skills  Proficient in Python for exploratory data analysis and data visualization  Additional ‘stretch assignments’ possible for candidates familiar with C++ or JavaScript Education Enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering from an accredited Canadian University. Petroleum, Energy, Chemical, Systems Design or Mechatronics disciplines preferred   Experience Previous experience with Data Analytics, Process Automation, Control Systems, or Drilling Rig experience is considered an asset
