THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for dynamic and compassionate staff to join The Vista on Sparks, a brand-new retirement home in Ottawa, Ontario!

Distinctively located on Ottawa’s iconic Sparks Street, the community is surrounded by peerless views of Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River, and the Gatineau Hills that intensify as you ascend the building. This is one-of-a-kind Retirement Living, with a location to match!
Reporting to the Executive Chef, the successful incumbent in the position of Cook will be responsible for preparing meals for our residents, using standardized recipes and prescribed diets, at appropriate temperatures and in portion-controlled quantities.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of a two-year community college culinary course or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Food Handling Certificate required.
  • Smart Serve Certification required.
  • CPR + First Aid Certification required.
  • Experienced in large quantity food preparation, as well as cooking from “scratch”.
  • Strong working knowledge of food services industry principles, methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbal and written.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Push, pull wheeled equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Bend, kneel, and work with arms raised on a regular basis.
  • Walk and stand on a variety of surfaces for at least 4 hours per day.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare daily menu items following standardized recipes and prescribed diets utilizing appropriate food preparation methods, portion sizes, and garnishing and presentation of food to ensure that food is prepared and presented in an acceptable manner.
  • Ensure food is stored in appropriate containers, labeled, and rotated to ensure high standards of freshness, minimize waste, and maximize quality.
  • Utilize proper food handling techniques at all times.
  • Monitor the quality and quantity of food supplies.
  • Follow established procedures for sanitation, safety, and quality assurance.
  • Daily cleaning and dishwashing duties.
  • Continuously follow our “good customer service” principle and ensure that these values are demonstrated in day to day practices.
