COOK I – JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Cook I Department: Food & Beverage / Culinary Reports To: Executive Chef / Sous Chef / Kitchen Manager FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly) ---------------------------------------- POSITION SUMMARY The Cook I is an entry-level culinary position responsible for assisting with basic food preparation and cooking tasks under the direction of more experienced kitchen staff. This role supports kitchen operations by preparing ingredients, performing simple cooking duties, and maintaining cleanliness and organization in the work area. ---------------------------------------- KEY RESPONSIBILITIES * Assist with basic food preparation such as washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients * Follow recipes and instructions provided by Cook II, Sous Chef, or Executive Chef * Prepare simple menu items under supervision * Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of assigned work areas, tools, and equipment * Set up and restock kitchen stations before, during, and after service * Properly label, store, and rotate food items using FIFO methods * Assist with receiving and storing deliveries as needed * Follow all food safety and sanitation guidelines at all times * Support kitchen staff during peak service times as directed * Perform dishwashing or utility tasks when required ---------------------------------------- QUALIFICATIONS * Previous kitchen or food service experience preferred but not required * Basic understanding of kitchen safety and sanitation practices * Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team * Willingness to learn and develop culinary skills * Strong attention to cleanliness and detail ---------------------------------------- PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS * Ability to stand for long periods (up to 8+ hours per shift) * Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40–50 lbs * Ability to work in a fast-paced, hot kitchen environment * Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand motions ---------------------------------------- WORK ENVIRONMENT This position works in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to heat, noise, and sharp equipment. Shifts may include evenings, weekends, and holidays depending on operational needs.
