KSCS is seeking an experienced individual to provide cooking services to the residents of the Turtle Bay Elder’s Lodge (TBEL) and community members under Home and Community Care Services.

DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Team Leader – Kitchen, TBEL, the Cook is responsible to provide cooking services to the residents of the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge and community members under Home and Community Care Services. Prepares the day-to-day menu of the Elder’s Lodge in conjunction with the Team Leader - Kitchen, assists in recipe development and standardization; ensures that the basic nutritional needs of the residents are met, makes coffee, prepares food as per menu planned. Cleans up the work area and all equipment daily. Accountable for sanitation practices and food handling safety measure. Decisions are straightforward in nature, within clearly defined procedures, and are regularly reviewed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum High School Diploma with one (1) to three (3) year related work experience.
  • Possess a valid Safe Food Handling Certificate.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge of operating equipment, such as ovens and cooking ranges is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of proper food handling procedures following best hygiene and sanitation practices aimed at providing quality food service.
  • Ability to prepare specialized health food.
  • Maintain a clean kitchen and work area.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a kitchen atmosphere.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Able to respect confidentiality of clients.
Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES

Food preparation and cooking for Turtle Bay Elder’s Lodge:

  • Prepares the day-to-day meals.
  • Reviews the menus in conjunction with the Kitchen Team Leader.
  • Ensures the basic nutritional needs of the residents are met and followed according to specific dietary needs/limitations.
  • Prepares meals for Meals on Wheels program.
  • Prepares ingredients/produce to be used for cooking.

Maintains cooking area and general cleaning:

  • Ensures the proper hygienic clean up of the work areas, as per Kitchen Standards of Practice (SOPs).
  • Ensures all equipment and fridges are cleaned on a regular basis.
  • Maintains and monitors overall cleanliness of the kitchen and dining room.
  • Washes/dries all dishes and larger cooking pots/pans.
  • Cleans coffee machine and coffee area.

Food service:

  • Serves prepared meals to residents and guests, in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Portions and packs Meals on Wheels meals (Monday-Friday).
  • Keeps daily attendance records of TBEL residents.
  • Makes coffee for residents, upon their request.

Food safety and storage, and inventory:

  • Ensures food is handled and stored in accordance with Safe Handling Procedures.
  • Ensures all appliances are in working order and check fridge/freezer temperatures.
  • Notifies supervisor of any equipment that requires maintenance.
  • Ensures all food items are properly stored.
  • Monitors stock and notifies supervisor when supplies are low.
  • Restocks, refills and rotates stock.
  • Refills coffee machine when needed.

ACCOUNTABILITY

  • To work as part of a team in order to provide consistent and professional service to clients.
  • To provide services in a manner consistent with KSCS Mission Statement and Personnel Policy Manual.
  • To ensure the provision of efficient and sanitary cooking services to the Turtle Bay Elders Lodge residents and HCCS.
  • To ensure the provision of nutritious meals based on elders’ needs.
  • To ensure the proper sanitation practices of the TBEL kitchen and work area.
  • To maintain confidentiality practices.
