POSITION SUMMARY

The Coordinator, Infection Prevention and Control is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of infection prevention and control policies and programs at Glen Stor Dun Lodge (GSDL). The role involves monitoring and ensuring compliance with infection control standards and other regulations, providing education and training to staff, and contributing to the development of policies and procedures aimed at reducing the risk of infection for residents and staff. The Coordinator plays a vital role in protecting the health and safety of residents by implementing evidence-based practices and ensuring the facility is prepared for any infectious outbreak.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education & Certifications:

  • Degree in Nursing, Microbiology, Medical Technology, Epidemiology, Health Sciences, or related field.
  • Certification as an Infection Prevention and Control Professional.
  • Certification through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIC), or equivalent.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in infection prevention and control, preferably within a healthcare or public health setting.

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Infection Control Expertise: In-depth knowledge of infection prevention and control principles, public health regulations, and best practices in healthcare settings.
  • Data Analysis: Proficient in tracking, analyzing, and reporting infection-related data to inform decision-making and public health strategies.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong ability to assess infection risks, implement solutions, and respond effectively to outbreaks.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to provide clear instructions and training to diverse groups and maintain ongoing communication with partners.
  • Compliance & Auditing: Ability to conduct compliance monitoring and regular audits to ensure adherence to health regulations and infection control standards.
  • Crisis Management: Ability to respond quickly to changing health circumstances and manage infection control measures during high-pressure situations or outbreaks.
  • Emotional Resilience: Ability to remain patient, empathetic, and composed in emotionally demanding situations.
Responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and practices to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate and respond to outbreaks, ensuring timely containment measures, communication with Public Health, and accurate documentation of all actions.
  • Conduct regular audits, surveillance, and risk assessments to identify infection control concerns and recommend corrective actions.
  • Educate staff, residents, families, and volunteers on infection prevention protocols, including hand hygiene, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and outbreak management.
  • Work closely with nursing, dietary, housekeeping, and other departments to integrate infection control measures into resident care plans and facility operations, ensuring resident safety while promoting quality of life.
  • Analyze infection trends and produce reports to inform decision-making, improve practices, and ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of surveillance data, outbreak management, training, and infection control audits, ensuring compliance with Ministry of Long-Term Care reporting requirements.
  • Act as a resource to staff and management, providing guidance and consultation on infection prevention and outbreak preparedness.
