Health Sciences North (HSN) is seeking an innovative individual for the position of Coordinator, Pharmacy Compounding to develop, organize and oversee all activities related to non-sterile compounding, sterile compounding and packaging of hazardous and non-hazardous preparations. They will work with pharmacy management to ensure departmental requirements for compounding mandated by Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) and Accreditation Canada are met while supporting the Manager, Pharmacy Operations with day-to-day activities of the pharmacy (e.g. scheduling, sick replacement) and the recruitment processes.
The ideal candidate will be a graduate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, with current Certificate of Registration as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists. Successful completion of a third-party evaluation/certification in sterile compounding is required. Preference will be given to candidates with additional specialized training in, maintained up-to-date knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate the required competencies in the compounding of sterile and non-sterile preparations.
We are looking for someone with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in Sterile Compounding Practices within a health care environment. Experience in the technical aspects of a hospital pharmacy distribution system is preferred.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

1. Graduate from an accredited Pharmacy Technician Program.
2. Current Certificate of Registration as a Licensed Pharmacy Technician in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists is required.
3. Additional specialized training in, maintained up-to-date knowledge of, and ability to demonstrate the required competencies in the compounding of sterile and non-sterile preparations is preferred.

5. Ministry of Labour “Worker Health and Safety Awareness in 4 Steps” training certificate is required.

EXPERIENCE:

1. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in Sterile Compounding Practices within a health care environment.
2. Experience in the technical aspects of a hospital pharmacy distribution system is preferred.

1. Work with pharmacy management to ensure departmental requirements for compounding mandated by Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) and Accreditation Canada are met.
2. Work collaboratively with the Manager, Pharmacy Operations to oversee compounding and cleaning and disinfecting personnel to yield high-quality sterile and non-sterile preparations that are safe for patients.
3. Support the Manager, Pharmacy Operations with day-to-day activities of the pharmacy (e.g. scheduling, sick replacement) and the recruitment process.
4. Implement appropriate measures to ensure the safety of personnel during compounding preparations.
5. Develop and implement a personnel training, certification and assessment program for compounding personnel, pharmacists, and cleaning and disinfecting personnel.
6. Ensure the facilities and equipment used to compound sterile and non-sterile preparations meet National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (NAPRA) requirements and are maintained, calibrated or certified according to manufacturers’ specifications or standards.
7. Utilize available and recognized scientific literature to determine stability and sterility parameters and to establish the beyond-use date (BUD) for each compounded preparation.
8. Design a quality assurance program to ensure that preparation activities are performed and implemented in accordance with standards of practice, scientific literature and existing data.
9. Ensure current editions of mandatory and supplementary references are made available to compounding personnel and updated as required.
10. Ensure all records required by NAPRA are completed, maintained and readily available for audit and inspection purposes. These records must be submitted to management on a regular basis.
11. Oversee the work of others in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), its regulations, and HSN policies.
12. Determine and align improvement projects with HSN’s Strategic Plan; monitor and adjust to achieve goal outcomes.
13. Participate in the accreditation process and work to ensure that the program and HSN achieve, maintain and continually improve upon their accredited status.
14. Teach, coach and lead staff in the development and monitoring of quality indicators and improvement initiatives.
15. Engage in and foster professional development of all staff and provide opportunities for learning within budgeted resources.
16. Ensure a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors; investigate report, debrief and take or direct corrective action as required on incidents.
17. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders/organizations/community groups to achieve program objectives, integrate and link services and foster partnerships across the continuum of service delivery.
18. Participate in education and training specific to current, relevant federal and provincial health and safety legislation, standards and guidelines.
19. Represent the department or program on various committees and in meetings as required.
