The Idaho Department of Education is committed to preparing students for college and career and for life.The Secondary Mathematics (6-12) and Technology Coordinator at the SDE oversees the development of standards, curricular review and professional development for these content areas. Additionally, this position is responsible for the implementation of the Idaho Math Initiative in partnership with the K-8 Mathematics, PLC, and MTSS Coordinator. The Idaho Mathematics Initiative provides purposeful professional learning opportunities for Idaho educators to deepen both mathematics content knowledge as well as pedagogical skills. This position will work with Idaho high schools to modernize mathematics instruction and integrate it with the development of technology programs. This position requires an understanding of secondary mathematics education, technology coursework at the high school level as well as knowledge for building mathematical and computational thinking and supporting high quality instructional practices.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with emphasis in mathematics education or closely related area required.
  • Five years of teaching experience in a classroom setting, including mathematics instruction.
  • Understanding of the relationship between mathematics and technology.
  • Experience planning and conducting professional development activities in mathematics.
  • Understanding of mathematical thinking for K-12 education, including content and pedagogy, and an understanding of how students learn math.
  • Experience handling a budget beyond personal finances.
  • Experience making presentations to groups.
  • Experience in a leadership role.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Proficient in MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and use of online search engines (e.g. travel, research, state website).
  • Ability to communicate well, orally and in writing, with a variety of groups.
  • Interpersonal skills and abilities to work effectively as a member of a team, promote team goals, and maintain team climate.

  • Master’s degree in educational leadership or mathematics education preferred.
  • Experience teaching Computer Science or other technology-related courses.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee mathematics for sixth to twelfth grade, working closely with the K-8 Mathematics Coordinator to collaborate on grades six to eight.
  • Oversee technology content areas for school districts; define and design standards that align with national standards, as well as business and postsecondary expectations.
  • Work with the Curricular Materials Coordinator to facilitate review and approval of curricular materials in 6-12 mathematics and K-12 technology.
  • Work collaboratively with the State Board of Education and the K-8 Mathematics Coordinator to manage the ongoing implementation of the Idaho Math Initiative.
  • Oversee state funded Regional Mathematics Centers in collaboration with the K-8 Mathematics Coordinator; develop related contracts, policies, and processes and evaluation methods.
  • Oversee state funded 6-12 secondary mathematics support and professional development contracts.
  • Recommend enhancements to existing programs to most effectively meet program requirements.
  • Coordinate with leadership for content program planning, development, and delivery, as well as compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Plan a variety of professional development opportunities related to 6-12 mathematics, and technology for teachers and district leaders.
  • Co-facilitate the Math Transitions Steering Committee with the Associate Academic Officer at the State Board of Education, including coordination of the Launch Years work and Math Badging project in Idaho.
  • Collaborate and consult with all SDE departments to improve statewide student achievement in mathematics.
  • Oversee statewide implementation of the state-provided online, adaptive supplemental math program for grades 6-12.
  • Actively participate in program evaluation and write annual Math Initiative Report collaboratively with the K-8 Mathematics Coordinator.
  • Oversee K-12 technology standards and program support and professional development contracts.
  • Plan a variety of professional development opportunities related to 6-12 mathematics and technology for teachers and district leaders
  • Promote public awareness of mathematics and technology directed at parents, students, teachers/administrators and the community at large, through website maintenance, public presentations, e-mail communication and written information.
  • Work with internal staff to update Idaho Administrative Code in regard to secondary mathematics and technology (e.g., graduation requirements, content requirements, etc.).
  • Serve as liaison between program leadership, federal, state, local agencies, citizen groups, and grantors/contractors.
  • Serve on relevant committees related to secondary mathematics and technology education within the State of Idaho and nationally.
  • Consult with other states’ programs to learn best practices for possible implementation in Idaho.
  • Serve as Idaho State Coordinator for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching (PAEMST) for the secondary award cycles.
  • Plan, facilitate and conduct meetings, as needed.
  • Support district leaders in the implementation of mathematics and technology related policies and procedures.
  • Serve as a member of the Board of Directors for Idaho Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
  • Collaborate with the Stem Action Center on mathematics and technology related projects.
  • Support the work of SDE coordinators and Regional Math Specialists in the implementation of Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in 6-12 mathematics.
  • Format any public documents for ADA accessibility per SDE policies and procedures.
  • Travel in state and out-of-state for meetings and conferences. Occasionally it involves evening hours for meetings or presentations.
