The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the oldest student association in Canada and has been a central student organization at Queen's since its founding in 1858. Today, the AMS acts as a service, advocacy, and governing body on behalf of all students enrolled in AMS-affiliated programs at Queen's University. The AMS is a not-for-profit entity created by the Society to ensure its continuing financial viability by overseeing the management of its services and associated financial affairs. It is bound by the By-laws and corporate philosophy of our Mission and Operating statements as set out in the AMS Constitution. In addition to providing wage-based service staff positions for students wanting employment, the AMS seeks to support the Society's broader objectives through the provisioning of a high quality, relevant range of student funded services, that provide a wide range of employment opportunities and meaningful out-of-classroom learning and skill acquisition experiences for students. Volunteer Summary The Queen’s Journal is a completely student-run newspaper at Queen's University. The paper was founded in 1873 and has been continually publishing ever since. The Journal currently publish a weekly print edition and regular online content throughout the year. Responsibilities Editing copy for grammar, spelling and style Becoming well versed in Journal style and Canadian Press style Fact-checking every article received for copy Attending all press days for the copy shift and coordinating with the co-copy editor on scheduling shifts, either from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., or 9 p.m until finish Being on call to edit digital stories remotely during the workday on Tuesdays and Wednesdays Attending all editorial board and section-head meetings The AMS is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment because of age, race, religion, colour, disability, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.

The Copy Editor is responsible for meticulously editing submitted copy for grammar, spelling, and adherence to both Journal and Canadian Press style guides, while also fact-checking every article received. This role requires attending all press days for copy shifts, coordinating schedules with the co-copy editor, and being available to remotely edit digital stories on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
