We are currently recruiting for an experienced Corporate Controller to work at our head office location in Ottawa, ON.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the CFO, the Corporate Controller will lead the full accounting function for Commissionaires Ottawa. This is a key leadership role responsible for financial reporting, compliance, and oversight of core accounting operations. You will manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general accounting functions, while collaborating closely with the Director of Finance, IT, and Payroll teams to support systems integration and strengthen internal controls.
As part of the Finance leadership team, you will work alongside senior leaders under the CFO to help define the department’s strategic direction and uphold the organization’s financial integrity.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Accounting Operations

  • Oversee daily operations of Accounts Receivable (AR), Accounts Payable (AP), and general accounting, ensuring completeness and accuracy of financial records, and timely vendor payment
  • Lead the month-end close for the organization, ensuring all reporting deadlines are met
  • Review and maintain the capital assets listing as well as the prepaids schedule

Monthly Analyses & Reporting

  • Manage bookkeeping for smaller entities using QuickBooks and prepare their monthly financial statements (income statement and balance sheet)
  • Review accounts receivable and accounts payable aging reports with relevant team leads; escalate major issues to the CFO
  • Prepare monthly financial statements for the main operating entity, including income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows
  • Conduct variance analyses on income statement and balance sheet results against budget, prior year, and prior month
  • Prepare and post adjusting journal entries where necessary
  • Compile consolidated financial results, including equity pick-up from affiliated entities
  • Present finalized financial results to the CFO
  • Review monthly financial statements prepared by the accounting team for affiliated or partner organizations and distribute them to the COO

Treasury, Compliance & Audit Management

  • Oversee treasury operations and manage debt capacity to support the organization’s financial health
  • Administer the corporate credit card program, ensuring policy compliance and effective usage
  • Stay ahead of legislative, contractual, and business changes, ensuring timely implementation of required financial adjustments
  • Lead the annual external audit and coordinate related financial reporting requirements

Stakeholder Collaboration

  • Foster strong working relationships with internal teams (HR, IT, and others) to ensure effective cross-departmental financial collaboration
  • Liaise with external partners including banks, auditors, vendors, and clients

Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide strategic leadership and direct oversight of the 5-person Controllership team (AR, AP, Accounting)
  • Mentor, coach, and develop team members to support their professional growth and maintain high team performance

Strategic Initiatives & Operational Excellence

  • Lead and contribute to strategic initiatives and special projects to drive operational efficiency and financial effectiveness
  • Conduct ad hoc financial reporting and investigations as required
  • Stay current with Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements and evolving accounting standards
  • Mentor co-op students when assigned, fostering the next generation of financial professionals
