QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Degree in Business Administration, Commerce, or similar with a major in accounting, finance, or a related field
  • Possession of a recognized professional Accounting or Finance designation (i.e., CPA)
  • Significant (preferably 5+ years) management or supervisory experience in a similar role, with a minimum of 8 years of full-cycle accounting and finance experience
  • Demonstrated experience and degree of comfort working in a group of companies and/or a family business
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel
  • Experience using various accounting systems, preferably QuickBooks Online
  • Strong background in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, tax, and investment management
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment, considered a strong asset
  • Well-developed negotiation skills, with an aptitude to influence others
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse industry
  • Ability to empower and lead a team towards operational excellence
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence, with a willingness to travel to affiliated locations, as required
    As the Corporate Controller, you’ll play a key role in both the strategic and operational success of the group. This position requires a proactive, hands-on leader who is comfortable managing the full spectrum of financial activities – from high-level planning, to day-to-day accounting.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the President and working closely with the management team, the successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the financial and administrative functions as the leader of the Finance team for MJM Energy and its related companies.

Specific responsibilities include, but will not be limited to:

  • Lead the finance and administration team (approximately 3 direct reports) including providing coaching, regular feedback and performance reviews, and workflow oversight
  • Provide direct supervision to payroll and the collection and accuracy of accounts payable and receivable
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure adherence to internal financial policies and procedures
  • Ensure all financial and non-financial reporting requirements are met on a timely, regular basis and in accordance with the appropriate/relevant Accounting Standards, on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis for each company
  • Coordinate year-end reviews or audits for each entity with external accountants
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and support ongoing forecasting and variance analysis
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenues, costs, budgets and actual expenditures
  • Oversee banking relationships, ensure covenant compliance, and manage for exchange exposure
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance financial and operational efficiency
  • Ensure timely and accurate filing of GST/HST, payroll remittances, and corporate income taxes; assist with SR&ED claims
  • Collaborate with leadership to mitigate operational risks related to inventory management and control, employee retention and compensation planning, capital asset tracking and investment, and corporate investment oversight
  • Support entity-specific initiatives with financial modelling and analysis
  • Oversee accounting systems and tools to support multi-entity operations
  • Support key business development activities in collaboration with the President and management team
  • Provide financial analysis and strategic input on initiatives, planning, and contract reviews
  • Manage corporate insurance policies, ensuring appropriate coverage and leading annual renewals and negotiations
  • Other responsibilities, as may be required
