LIMITED TERM 12 MONTHS; MAY BE EXTENDED UP TO 24 MONTHS OR BECOME PERMANENT.
Under general direction, either: (1) to supervise a small group of Correctional Counselors; or (2) to serve as assistant supervisor of a large classification and treatment section; to perform peace officer duties as required; and to do other related work.
Assigns and reviews work of Correctional Counselors I or trainees in a reception center or institution; instructs and assists with in- service training programs, evaluates staff performance and takes or effectively recommends appropriate action; assigns and reviews cases and counsels with and gives assistance to Correctional Counselors I on difficult case problems; integrates casework services with activities of other disciplines represented on a clinic team in a diagnostic center; supervises and checks the compilation of case records to determine that policies and appropriate procedures are followed; follows up on specific classification recommendations; assists in the development of effective case-work procedures; may carry a reduced caseload; coordinates the work of the Department of Corrections and that of the law enforcement agencies and interested public and private agencies; directs the group counseling program at an institution; conducts or directs individual and group psychotherapy and counseling sessions; consults with custodial, educational, and care and treatment staffs; makes recommendations to the Board of Prison Terms for parole and retention of inmates; is responsible for the scheduling of the unit classification and disciplinary committee and is a member of such committee; may be assigned as a Senior Disciplinary Hearing Officer; investigates inmate appeals; performs peace officer duties which include maintaining order and supervising the conduct of inmates, maintaining the safety of persons and property, inspecting premises and searching inmates for contraband, and replacing and/or assisting custodial staff during emergency situations, such as fights, attempted escapes, or major incidents such as riots.
