JOB SUMMARY
This position is located in the DC Department of Corrections (DOC). The Deputy Warden provides oversight for planning, organizing, leading, directing and controlling of major programs such as security, rehabilitation, compliance, support services, and operations in the DOC. This position functions as a member of the facility’s management team. Decision making is mission critical and has substantial impact to the overall risk reduction and risk control operations for the department and the citizens of Washington, DC.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION
The incumbent must have demonstrated the ability to perform supervisory or administrative duties successfully. This includes (1) understanding the problems of custody, treatment, training, and release of inmates of penal or correctional institutions; (2) a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of an institution’s internal policies, programs, regulations, and procedures; and (3) training subordinates, coordinating and directing activities and functions, evaluating performance of operations and the effectiveness of programs, and maintaining high standards or work objectives.

Administers service provisions related to the safe, secure and sanitary housing, as well as correctional programs and services for inmates 24/7. Participates in policy leadership discussions to ensure achievement of the Department’s goals and objectives; and provides clear and concise instructions to staff for achievement of the agency’s goals and objectives. Oversees the direction, deployment and post coverage for the entire Correctional Officer workforce, through the rank of Major, and clerical support for administrative processes, and security management.
Responsible for the development of programs that will ensure consistent implementation of the Department’s continuum of required services. Establishes effective community relations and ensures appropriate information sharing regarding the mission and goals of the agency. Manages and oversees the direction, execution, deployment, training and monitoring of staff, which includes but is not limited to adjustment board, mailroom, commissary, environmental services, supply management, clothing issuances. Coordinates through the Center for Professional Development and Learning (CPDL) relevant training for employees assigned to the facility including orientation, preservice, in service and specialized training programs.
