POSITION SUMMARY:

The Cost Accountant plays a critical role in analyzing and controlling production and operational costs to support strategic financial decision-making. This position is responsible for conducting detailed cost analysis, preparing accurate cost reports, and ensuring effective inventory management. The Cost Accountant collaborates closely with cross-functional teams to monitor cost performance, identify efficiency opportunities, and support budgeting, forecasting, and pricing strategies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation or actively pursuing.
  • 5-7 years of experience in a similar role.
  • Proven record of hands-on experience with all accounting processes and all areas of accounting.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Experience in costing and financial planning & analysis (FP&A) is an asset.
  • Experience in Food, Pharmaceutical or Manufacturing experience would be considered an asset.
  • Advanced Excel skills would be considered an asset.
  • Sage X3 experience would be considered an asset.
  • Proven record of implementing process improvements.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Maintain a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information.

Responsibilities
  • Cost analysis and Reporting
  • Analyze production costs, raw material usage, labor and overheads to determine the cost of goods manufactured (COGM).
  • Prepare detailed cost reports and variance analysis on a regular basis.
  • Create and monitor various cost types and update them as necessary based on actual production data.
  • Inventory and Cost Control
  • Maintain accurate records of inventory transactions, including raw materials, work-in-progress (WIP), and finished goods.
  • Perform monthly and year-end valuation.
  • Conduct periodic inventory counts and reconcile physical counts with system records.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend ways to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting
  • Assist in the preparation of budgets and financial forecasts related to production and operational costs.
  • Monitor actual vs. budgeted costs and report variances with root cause analysis.
  • Provide cost projections for new products, recipes, or process changes.
  • Product Costing and Pricing Support
  • Calculate product costs for new product development and provide input for pricing decisions.
  • Evaluate the impact of changes in raw material prices, packaging, and labor on product margins.
  • Collaborate with production and R&D teams to assess the financial viability of proposed changes.
  • Compliance and Internal Controls
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, financial regulations, and food industry standards.
  • Assist in internal and external audits by providing cost-related documentation.
  • Develop and implement cost control policies and procedures.
  • Systems and Process Improvement
  • Use ERP systems and manufacturing software to track cost data and improve reporting accuracy.
  • Identify inefficiencies in cost accounting processes and recommend improvements.
  • Support digital transformation and automation efforts related to finance and cost tracking.
  • Cross-Departmental Collaboration
  • Work closely with procurement, production, quality control, and sales teams to ensure financial goals align with operational objectives.
  • Provide financial insights to support decision-making across departments.
  • Some travel may be required.
