Description

The Costa Rica Program Manager leads the program team and is responsible for the vision, strategy, and execution of all CR programs. This includes managing high-level operations while contributing to program implementation, maintaining existing relationships, and fostering new partnerships with research and service organizations.
Aligned with EPI’s strategic plan, the Program Manager ensures high standards in education, risk management, and authentic engagement with research collaborators, alongside efficient budget management. The role supports grant proposal development (identification, application, implementation, and reporting) to secure funding for local program participation.
The Program Manager supervises the Costa Rica team, promoting a positive workplace culture, compliance with EPI policies and Costa Rican laws, and professional growth among staff. They are responsible for cultivating an inclusive workplace that encourages self-reflection, feedback, creativity, and collaboration.
Key responsibilities and duties

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Licenciatura or Master’s degree in biological sciences, education, or business administration.
  • 3–5 years of experience in program management, including staff supervision, program implementation, and budget oversight.
  • 2–3 years of experience in educational leadership, curriculum development, and program evaluation.
  • Grant writing and donor relationship experience.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English, both written and oral.
  • Proficiency in project planning and management tools (e.g., Salesforce, Google Drive, Asana).
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and dynamic environment.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Experience working with an NGO.
  • Background in research or conservation programs involving students.
  • Field experience in Caribbean ecosystems or sea turtle conservation.
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative program evaluation methods.
  • Valid Wilderness First Responder certification.
Responsibilities

PROGRAM MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Program Supervision: Oversee the implementation of all Costa Rica programs, ensuring efficient execution, adherence to EPI’s strategic goals, and high standards in environmental education and risk management.
  • Strategic Relationships: Build and maintain long-term partnerships with local schools to advance equity, diversity, and access for local students.
  • Resource Management: Oversee resource allocation for program implementation.
  • Permitting and Vendor Management: Manage all permitting processes, sign and evaluate MOUs, and maintain positive vendor relationships while ensuring cost efficiency.
  • Program Quality: Guarantee high-quality program content delivery while maximizing operational efficiency.
  • Risk Management: Train and mentor staff on risk management, review incidents, and continually improve protocols.
  • Debriefs and Feedback: Co-lead mid- and end-of-season debriefs; collect feedback to enhance operations and internal systems.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Coordinate with admissions, development, communications, and finance departments to share updates and collaborate on resources.
  • Emergency Response: Participate in the 24-hour emergency response system during field courses.
  • Representation: Serve as the organization’s representative in Costa Rica, managing legal processes, strategic alliances, staff contracts, and attendance at special events.

DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with development staff to write and submit grant proposals.
  • Work with the Executive and Development Directors to cultivate donor relationships.
  • Oversee grant implementation and reporting processes.
