About the Role We are seeking a highly motivated mid-level attorney, to join our team based in Taipei, Taiwan or in Hong Kong. In this role, you will partner with and report to a Senior Director, based in London, and serve as the primary on-the-ground generalist legal support for the region. Success in this position requires the confidence to work independently, and the ability to recognize when to seek guidance and support. This role calls for a self-starter who has excellent judgment, initiative, and the ability to balance autonomy with appropriate escalation. The ideal candidate will be proactive, resilient, and enthusiastic to take on a broad and varied range of issues and work and should be comfortable dealing with uncertainty and advising with an incomplete picture. This position will involve working closely with business partners in Taiwan and Hong Kong as well as international business partners based in London, Tokyo and the US. Work will include commercial contracting as well as providing support to our Real Estate, HR, Privacy and Compliance teams. The successful candidate will need to be: • experienced in communicating and collaborating effectively with business partners across all levels of the business; and • fluent in Mandarin and a fluent English speaker as there will be frequent communication with the US and the UK. This role will be fully supported by international legal colleagues based in London, Tokyo, New York and San Francisco. What You'll Do Act as a generalist attorney supporting the business in all areas of Taiwanese retail operations, working with local outside counsel as appropriate and as agreed with your manager. The work may include the following areas and will be flexed depending on experience and skillset: General Commercial & Procurement: collaborating with business partners and the Procurement team in relation to vendor issues and predominantly negotiating supply of goods and services agreements for Taiwan and Hong Kong and potentially the APAC region; Real Estate: work with the Real Estate team and external counsel as necessary on Taiwanese store leasing issues and helping negotiate store and corporate property real estate documentation across the APAC region including new leases, lease renewals, licences and variations; Marketing & Promotion: review and support the Taiwan Marketing team in relation to pricing, promotions, competitions and other consumer engagement activities for both in store and online; Data Protection: collaborate with US based privacy team on Taiwanese and Chinese data protection issues including assisting with privacy reviews, updating notices and implementing data processing agreements, with support from outside counsel as necessary; Employment: advising the business (both corporate offices and stores) on employment and contractor-related matters; Franchise: assist on franchise and distribution issues and drafting franchise, distribution and related agreements for sale of product through partners operating in the APAC region; Regulatory: supporting business partners to ensure compliance with local statutory, regulatory and compliance requirements in Taiwan & Hong Kong; Compliance & Ethics: act as compliance ambassador within the Asia region providing in person legal and compliance training, oversight of our anti-corruption due diligence process and generally support a strong culture of integrity & compliance; Litigation: support the Senior Director with disputes, claims and litigation relating to the Asia region providing timely, accurate updates as may be required for reporting purposes; and Operations: conduct research, organize and maintain legal files, assist with filings and utilize and collaborate effectively with external counsel to obtain local legal advice helping properly manage external legal spend. Who You Are Mid-level career qualified attorney in Taiwan and/or Hong Kong (4 – 8 years post-qualification); Enjoys the challenge of engaging with work that falls outside existing areas of expertise and knowledge; Excellent communications skills and judgement to determine when issues can be managed locally and independently and when issues require escalation; Strong inter-personal skills to work with different levels of management; Comfortable working effectively with business partners and legal colleagues located in different territories and time zones across the globe; Self-starter, pragmatic and commercially minded, confident accurately assessing risk and advising, demonstrates solid and practical business judgment; Strong written, verbal and workload management skills, demonstrating a strong ability to manage multiple tasks and business partners and meet deadlines; Strong integrity, honesty and a demonstrated capacity to protect the interests of the business; Ability to speak Mandarin and English fluently; Experience of commercial work within an in-house legal department of a multinational company is highly desirable; and Experience of working within a US company culture and an ability to speak Japanese is desirable.
