JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Court Clerk
HOURS: 35 Hours per week
SALARY: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour - Depending on Experience
BENEFITS: Full
SUPERVISOR: Court Administrator
JOB SUMMARY The Deputy Court Clerk is responsible for managing case files, maintaining accurate legal records of court proceedings, including filing documents, collecting fees, scheduling hearings, administering oaths, and providing information to the public, lawyers, and judges. The Deputy Court Clerk will maintain the Law Library with information, books, periodicals etc… that will aid the public in navigating through Tribal Court and specifically Judicial Ordinances.

QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Individual must be of high moral character and integrity.
  2. Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  3. Must be physically able to carry out the duties of the office.
  4. Must be free of any conviction of a felony or crime of moral turpitude.
  5. Must be willing to work with Court Personnel in all duties as assigned.
  6. Must be willing to apply and maintain a Notary Public Certificate with the State of Massachusetts
  7. Administrative background required
  8. Skill in the use of automation systems, including knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office software such as, Word, Excel and Outlook

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Legal administrative preferred
  2. Ability to manage multiple tasks within a tight time schedule
  3. Strong organizational skills
  4. Ability to communicate information accurately and in a timely manner to individuals within and outside the judiciary
  5. Good oral and written communication skills
    Additional Information: Must possess a valid driver’s license and pass a CORI/background check and toxicology screening.

Responsibilities
  • To undertake all duties and functions otherwise authorized for the clerk by Tribal law, or necessary and proper to the exercise of a duty or function authorized by Tribal law.
  • To certify a true copy of Court records, and to accurately keep each and every records of the Supreme Court and District Court, and such other lower courts as shall be established.
  • To assist in providing a record to accurately and completely record all proceedings and hearings of the Courts.
  • To provide stenographic and clerical service to the Court.
  • To act as Librarian, and to keep, maintain and update the Court’s Law Library.
  • To undertake all duties assigned or delegated to the Clerk’s office by Tribal law or Court Rule.
  • To work co-operatively with the Elders Judiciary Committee (EJC), Judges, Court Administrator and Court Clerk. To carry out all duties assigned by the Court Administrator in collaboration with the Court Clerk.
  • Review case dockets, court filings and orders for necessary action.
  • Review the quality of physical and electronic filed documents, ensure that all orders and automated entries are appropriately and accurately docketed, and make summary entries on the docket of all filings and proceedings.
  • Handles court mail and correspondence taking any necessary action relating there to.
  • Answers phone and responds to Voicemail messages in a timely fashion.
