Job Title: Crèche Supervisor (Saturdays)
Position Reports to: Gym Manager
Location/Site: Smart Gym, The Wedge, Silverburn Roundabout
Working Hours: Saturday shift - 10am-12pm. Holiday cover and occasional shift swaps expected. Cover requests will not extend beyond 10am-12pm, any day.
Contract Type: 2 hours per week + overtime/cover (additional permanent shifts may be offered in the future)
Pay rate: £15/hour
Job Summary
Smart Gym is looking for a patient and attentive Crèche Supervisor to supervise children whilst their parents workout. The role requires someone with exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to form trusting relationships with parents, children, staff and other members of the community. This role is central to supporting the operational delivery of the Smart Gym model and requires someone who shares the company’s culture, particularly our social values and commitment to the families we support.
Context of the Role
Crèche Supervisor will oversee our crèche/soft gym facilities by monitoring the behavioural and emotional concerns of babies and children, providing them with age-appropriate guidance and working with parents to ensure that children socialising in a positive way. This role will also require you to assist with disinfecting soft gym equipment and other duties to ensure that the children are in a safe, engaging, and clean environment. Crèche Supervisor should be thorough and caring with an exceptionally level of awareness and alertness. You should be prepared to meet the physical demands of the position and have an understanding of the childhood development process. During quiet periods, this post will have a certain degree of cross-over. In the case of Crèche Supervisor, you will be expected to undertake basic reception/admin/customer service duties when there are either: A) no children present in the crèche, or B) another creche staff member presents who is within care ratios.

Experience:

• Nursery/Childcare: 3 years (preferred)

• Encouraging and explaining to children the use of age-appropriate equipment, including gym toys and smart mirrors.
• Maintaining a safe workplace: monitoring children for health, behavioural, and emotional issues and reporting concerns to staff and parents.
• Helping children discover the importance of exercising and socialising.
• Ensuring children are learning positive behaviours and providing guidance as needed.
• Preparing children to enter the next level of care or for entry into nursery or school.
• Keeping records relating to child care.
• Maintaining a positive relationship with parents, working with parents to help children progress towards educational and behavioural goals.

Additional duties when creche is quiet:

• Greeting/thanking people at the reception desk.
• Showing people around the gym; explaining services/USPs, memberships options, how to book, etc.
• Cleaning and tidying

Person Specification:

Essential

• At least two years’ experience in a similar role.
• Decisive, patient and alert with attentiveness to the needs and safety of children.
• The ability to forge strong relationships with parents, children, staff and members.
• Strong understanding of stages of childhood development.
• An ability to summarise complex information clearly and concisely, both when delivering services and reporting progress.
• Sociable, enthusiastic and polite with a positive approach to work.

Introduction to Smart Gym
Our children are watching everything we do, and we know that our mental health has a serious impact on them.
For example, Stanford Medicine estimates the heritability of depression is 40-50%. This is worrying because 1 in 5 new mums and 50% of their partners develop a mental health issue following the birth of their child.
Research shows that exercise is just as effective as antidepressants for treating depressive disorders but for most parents and carers, gyms are not accessible or affordable.
In our pre-launch surveys of over 1,000 Glasgow caregivers, 70% of parents have reported that their biggest barrier to exercise was “childcare commitments”, whilst the second biggest barrier was that “gyms are too expensive”.
Smart Gym is a multi-award-winning, low-cost, family-focused social enterprise formed by parents to break these barriers and prevent family history repeating itself in future generations.
Our aim is to abate intergenerational health issues such as depression, anxiety and obesity-related illnesses in children through early intervention which includes introducing them to a gym environment from a young age as well as improving the lives of their role models–their parents and carers.
We believe that by inspiring caregivers to instil positive learned behaviours in exercise-based environments, and by using physical activity as a treatment for mental illness, we can create deep-rooted, long-term social change within our community.
Housing over 1,500 members, Smart Gym disrupts the fitness industry by welcoming children age 8+ to use our gym alongside their caregiver and ensuring children aged 0-8 are looked after in our onsite crèche whilst parents workout. This is where you come in!
