As a Crew Leader/Labourer II, you will play a pivotal role in delivering approved work plans for Horticulture operations from April to October, and as a Labourer II for Snow and Ice Control (SNIC)/Active Pathways Removal (APR) from November to March. You will provide direct supervision and leadership to field crews, ensuring tasks are completed safely and efficiently, and fostering a collaborative team environment. This position requires a commitment to continuous improvement and maintaining effective working relationships with the public, City departments, and external organizations. You’ll also contribute valuable input to budget processes and uphold the City’s cultural commitments of being Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Possession of excellent communication skills (written and verbal), as well as analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Exemplary customer service skills.

  • Ability to monitor work plans for timeliness, quantity, quality, productivity, and accomplishments.
  • Ability to work and make decisions in an independent manner.
  • Knowledge of City policies, procedures, bylaws, legislation, and the collective agreement between the City of Edmonton and CUPE local 30.
  • Experience monitoring and coaching employees and resolving issues with employees.

Qualifications:

  • Two (2) year diploma in a related field; Red Seal Journeyman in Landscape Horticulture, or equivalencies may be considered.
  • Three (5) years of related experience in parks maintenance, construction or operations, or horticultur
Responsibilities
  • Provide field-level instruction and hands-on leadership to maintenance crews, demonstrating operational best practices.

  • Conduct work in the field, implement daily work plans, and train field crews on safe and efficient task completion.

  • Offer expertise and assist with implementing industry best practices in horticultural subjects such as planting, weeding, pruning, and Integrated Pest Management.
  • Operate and perform general maintenance on specialized tools and equipment like mowers, chainsaws, and water trucks.
  • Participate in planning annual flower and shrub orders, pruning locations, and inventory control.
  • Lead crews by fostering a culture of safety, including conducting safety inspections, toolbox talks, and safety orientations.
  • Provide recommendations on equipment updates to increase efficacy and efficiency.
  • Perform Labourer II duties during the winter months with Active Pathways, including work requiring specialized skills and complex tools/equipment such as Calcium Chloride application, self propelled snow blowers and brooms.
  • Adhere to standard operating procedures and essential safety measures, participating in safety and environmental programs.
  • Prioritize work assignments, determine material needs, and ensure all tools and equipment are ready for use.
  • Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with the public and other employees.
  • Coach and mentor less experienced labourers.
  • Other duties as required
