The New Mexico Department of Justice (NMDOJ) is at the forefront of driving real change in public safety, and we want you to be a part of it. As the state’s chief legal authority, NMDOJ is dedicated to upholding justice, protecting the rights of all New Mexicans, and tackling the toughest challenges facing our communities. Under the leadership of Attorney General Raúl Torrez, we are taking bold steps to fight crime and make a lasting impact.
One of our key initiatives is the creation of a state Crime Gun Intelligence Center (CGIC), a cutting-edge effort that harnesses technology, intelligence-driven investigations, and cross-agency collaboration to track and remove violent offenders from our communities. By integrating advanced tools like the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) and advanced analytics, CGIC will revolutionize how firearm-related crimes are investigated and solved.
This is more than just a job it is an opportunity to be on the front lines of shaping a safer future for New Mexico. If you’re passionate about justice, innovation, and making a real difference in the fight against violent crime, we encourage you to join us.

Why does the job exist?
New Mexico is in the grip of a gun violence crisis, one that demands immediate, intelligence-driven solutions. Firearms were the leading cause of death among children and teens (ages 1-17) from 2018 to 2022. Over the past decade, our gun death rate has surged by 76%, making New Mexico the third highest in the nation. Gun violence is highly concentrated, with less than 0.5% of the population responsible for up to 70% of gun-related homicides.
Traditional enforcement alone is not enough, and this position is key to changing that. As a CGIC Analyst, you will support a statewide initiative to combat firearm-related crimes, enhance investigations, and bring justice to communities affected by violence. This role is vital in strengthening investigative efforts, fostering interagency collaboration, and ensuring law enforcement has the resources needed to hold violent offenders accountable.
How does it get done?
CGIC Analysts play a critical role in converting ballistic evidence into actionable intelligence by analyzing NIBIN leads, triaging potential connections between cases, and supporting law enforcement partners with high-quality intelligence products. They are responsible for reviewing and interpreting data from the NIBIN Enforcement Support System (NESS), conducting firearm trace analysis using ATF’s eTrace platform, and compiling link charts, timelines, target profiles, and case summaries to support investigations.
Analysts work closely with participating agencies to gather incident reports, case files, and supplemental records related to crime gun intelligence. They participate in recurring briefings with law enforcement partners to share regional trends, promote NIBIN participation, and ensure consistent intelligence-sharing across jurisdictions. CGIC Analysts also track and document success stories, maintain intelligence case logs, and assist in audit preparation and compliance reporting.
They use tools such as TLOxp, Accurint, CLEAR, Leads Online, LinX, and NCIC to conduct investigative research and support intelligence development. In addition, they may assist with training sessions or presentations and serve as liaisons between the NMDOJ and local, state, and federal agencies to strengthen cross-agency coordination and maximize the utility of crime gun intelligence.
Who are the customers?
In this role, you will serve as a critical link between NMDOJ, law enforcement agencies across New Mexico, and federal partners like the ATF. Your work will directly support investigations, improve intelligence-sharing, and contribute to holding offenders accountable in firearm-related crimes. By supporting coordinated efforts across multiple agencies, you will help foster collaboration, strengthen investigative outcomes, and advance the broader mission of promoting public safety throughout the state.
