Summary This position is for the advanced practice paramedic, who demonstrates the skill set and experience necessary to manage critically ill and injured patients. This is achieved through a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a high volume 911 system as a paramedic and being certified through the International Board of Specialty Certifications as a Flight Paramedic-Certified or Critical Care Paramedic OR being certified through the UMBC as a Critical Care Transport Paramedic (CCT-P). The desired result of the Critical Care Paramedic (CCP) intervention is to safely transport high risk patient populations and those requiring mobile intensive care and treatment above and beyond the scope of practice of a paramedic on an Advance Life Support (ALS) ambulance. Responsibilities (50%)* The CCP will function under the job description of Paramedic while not engaged in inter-facility transfers requiring mobile intensive care. The CCP will respond to 911 calls and requests for lower acuity inter-facility transfers as designated by the shift supervisor and department policy. (25%)* The CCP will be expected to manage high acuity patients during inter-facility transfers. Once the criteria is met to designate the transfer as a Mobile Intensive Care (MICU) or Specialty Care Transport (SCT), the CCP will be mobilized. The CCP will be expected to manage these patients during transit to the receiving facility. The CCP will be expected to be proficient in the administration of blood products, vasoactive drugs, paralytics, induction agents, interpret arterial blood gases (ABG�s), manage ventilator dependent patients, manage invasive monitoring devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impella devices, left ventricular assist devices, and more. (25%)* Due to the highly specialized nature of the patients the CCP will be expected to manage, extensive training and continuing education will be required to ensure proficiency in their duties. This shall include but is not limited to: Maintaining the designated FP-C or CCP-C certification and follow all on a four-year renewal cycle requirements and an additional 100 continuing education hours. Maintain additional certifications above that of the Paramedic including Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), and Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS). Shadow in the Medical and Neuro ICU, OR, and Labor and Delivery. Complete department issued continuing education assignments, and other duties as assigned.� OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Required to document assessment, intervention, and outcome of all patients receiving care in designated report writing software. Required to participate in a culture of safety including practices of team huddle, procedure time outs, root cause analysis, and safety evaluations of crew, patient, and other staff. Generates ongoing public awareness and education programs to ensure that medical center staff, physicians, and the general public perceive this service (EMS) and the Medical Center in a positive manner. Evaluates readiness and safety of emergency equipment and vehicles. This includes cardiac monitor, external pacemaker, pulse oximeter, laryngoscope, and any/all equipment required by the State of Michigan. Included is the assessment of the emergency vehicles safety. The paramedic determines the road worthiness of the vehicles. Cleans and polishes EMS vehicles and EMS stations on a daily basis. Included is the decontamination of any vehicle/equipment after unsafe exposure to contaminated substances. Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description. Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s). Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching. Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
