Description
As a Cryogenic Operations Specialist at Photonic, you will be an integral part of our Research and Development (R&D) Operations team, working at the forefront of cutting-edge technology. Your primary focus will be to support our scientific and R&D teams in their experiments, particularly in the development of the world’s first truly scalable quantum computing system. This role requires a blend of technical expertise, hands-on experience with cryogenic systems, and the ability to contribute to the operational efficiency of our experimental processes.
Please include a cover letter with your resume (in one file) describing how you would be a great fit at Photonic and what attributes you could bring to our growing team.
WHAT YOU BRING TO OUR TEAM
You thrive on the challenge of learning new technologies and scientific advancements, leveraging your extensive expertise in Cryogenic Operations. With an open mind and a creative approach, you excel at solving complex, multi-variable problems. To succeed in this role, we’re looking for someone with:
A college diploma or university degree, accompanied by 5+ years of hands-on experience in cryogenics
A meticulous approach to documentation
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts clearly and effectively
A strong service-oriented mindset
Self-motivation and a proactive attitude
Exceptional time management skills
Responsibilities:
Cryostat Operational Support
Provide regular support to scientific teams for cooling down and warming up their experiments.
Pull sample probes (ICE) and handle cryostat cans (Cryomech).
Operate cryostat systems, ensuring they reach and maintain their base temperatures.
Mount photonic samples into the cryostat and align them to fiber arrays.
Cryostat Service Support
Perform preventative maintenance on cryostat systems, including changing scroll pumps, tip-seals, and adsorption filters in high-pressure compressors.
Assist in cryostat upgrades by changing components such as magnets, fiber arrays, and other critical elements.
Execute corrective actions to ensure system readiness, including repairs to electrical input/output lines, thermometry/thermalization, vacuum system leak-checking, and PLC control systems for pump and sensor control.
Cryostat Operationalization Support
Identify and implement improvements to standard operating procedures, cycle times, and cryostat control systems.
Enhance gas-handling systems and develop data telemetry systems and data acquisition systems (DAQ) for better operational efficiency.
Develop jigs, fixtures, mechanical schemas, and optical systems (microscopes, digital cameras) to improve sample mount precision and performance.
Rapid Prototyping and Machine Shop Support
Support quick-turnaround cryostat parts production for operational patches and proof-of-concept projects.
Engage in mechanical design using Solidworks/CAD and perform machine shop activities such as CNC machining, manual machining, and handwork (e.g., tapping, surface grinding, lapping, and gold-plating procedures).
Utilize CAM software (Fusion 360) and PCB design tools (Altium) to assist in the design and manufacturing of electronic components.
Training and Documentation Support
Train and mentor new cryostat users and service technicians.
Develop and maintain documentation to ensure the safe and efficient use and maintenance of cryostat and research systems.
Document electronics assembly procedures (soldering cables, feedthroughs) and electronics design and manufacturing techniques to ensure repeatability and quality.
