KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Marine Biology, Aquatic Sciences, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 1–2 years experience working in an aquatic systems lab or similar research setting is preferred.
  • Strong lab and research skills, including ability to execute experiments, collect and statistically analyze data and report writing.
  • Experience in maintaining algal cultures and ability to work in a lab setting
  • Ability to conduct and synthesize literature reviews.
  • Experience maintaining aquatic cultivation systems (tanks, filters, etc.) and monitoring systems
  • Ability to work independently with strong attention to detail.
  • Organized, with excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Comfortable working on-site at our seaweed nursery in Nanaimo, BC.

    Contract length: 12 months
    Pay: $25.00-$29.00 per hour
    Expected hours: 40 per week

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary seasonally and as the business grows. Core duties include:

  • Maintain and monitor gametophyte bank cultures, ensuring quality and viability for ongoing production and R&D.
  • Produce kelp seed on spools, support cultivation efforts, and monitor health and growth in aquatic systems (biological measurements, water quality, environmental control, etc.).
  • Conduct experiments related to optimizing kelp yield and seed quality, including collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Assist with literature reviews and background research to support R&D initiatives.
  • Draft, maintain, and improve SOPs (standard operating procedures) related to culturing and lab work.
  • Perform basic facility and equipment maintenance, ensuring smooth lab and nursery operations.
  • Support general research activities under the guidance of the Chief Scientist.
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping and contribute to reports, presentations, and internal documentation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, requested, or deemed necessary by the organization
