Description POSITION TITLE: Culture/Language Teacher I and Teacher II CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Culture/Language Resources Department SUPERVISOR: Culture/Language Resources Director GRADE: NE10 $19.36 ($40,270) - $29.04 ($60,405) Culture/Language Teacher I NE11 $21.06 ($43,817) - $31.59 ($65,726) Culture/Language Teacher II Position Summary: Under Direct Supervision the Language Teacher is responsible for instructing all participants in the language skills of the Washoe Tribe. Organizes and develops curriculum to be presented in the classroom. Coordinates involvement of each participant’s progress and maintains accurate records. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: · Participates in all phases of the Culture/Language Resources Department. · Creates, implements and actively participates in the development of all activities and curriculum that meet the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the language participants. · Works closely with staff and Washoe families establishing positive and productive relationships. · Organizes planning to meet the special needs of all language participants. · Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction. · Uses varied learning environments and techniques to present subject matter related to Washoe language participant in classes. · Coordinates with other departments, programs and local schools to meet with participants and teach Washoe Language at regularly scheduled intervals. Including but not limited to; Head Start, Middle Schools and High Schools. · Establishes and maintains standards for participants behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the language classes. · Maintains order in the language classes. · Communicates with participants through personal contact and meetings to discuss students' progress. · Keeps attendance records and participants assessment documentation. · Participates in curriculum development programs and implements the same. · Attends meetings and trainings and assist with the development and facilitation of programs and activities for participants. · Performs other duties as required. Additional Duties: Culture/Language Teacher II · Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records. · Evaluates participants levels of language acquisition, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports. · Coordinates meetings with fluent Washoe speakers and documents meetings for preservation of Washoe Language as well curriculum development. · Able to transcribe personal notes and linguistic field notes using the Washoe Orthography. · Works with linguists to ensure consistency in transcribing the Washoe Language and developing resources. · Facilitates Cultural Activities and Culturally relevant programs/programming for participants of various backgrounds. · Collaborates with other departments and outside agencies to include Washoe Culture/Language. · Conducts research on best practices for language immersion and academic achievement. · Maintains student files and schedules. · Maintains accurate reports and timely records of all participations and progress. · Performs other duties as required. Requirements Minimum Qualifications: Culture/Language Teacher I · High School Diploma or GED and two years work experience in a nonprofit or educational setting; must be knowledgeable in Washoe language and culture; or equivalent combination of education and experience. · Must have general knowledge of speaking, reading and writing in Washoe Language. · Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment. · Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy. · Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation. Culture/Language Teacher II · Must meet all of the above minimal qualification above as well as; · Conversationally fluent speaker in the Washoe Language and have a minimum of four years of experience teaching Washoe Language in a classroom and or community setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledgeable of linguistics and able to transcribe the Washoe Language in written form from audio recordings or oral elicitations.
