Major functions: Assist the Director of Curriculum in the development, maintenance, and product integrity of preschool and kindergarten curriculum.
I. General Responsibilities
Abide by applicable governmental requirements and by Challenger School policies, including the Employee Dress Policy (06-17) and the Employee Handbook (11-36), with special attention to the Code of Conduct.
II. Required Performance
1. Study, understand, and when assigned, deliver Challenger’s program and teaching methods clearly and effectively, using curriculum and teaching techniques as described in the curriculum guides and Challenger Manual, especially, but not exclusively, the Seven Laws, PPPIIR, and PPP (prepare, position, perform). Establish suggested routines and organizational procedures for effective classroom behavior management, and teach students to accept responsibility for their behavior. Plan weekly, using the assigned curriculum guides, prepare teaching material prior to student arrival time. Use designated resources in preparing and presenting the Challenger curriculum. Provide constant and undivided attention to the proper supervision of all students.
2. Work with Curriculum Department to monitor the effectiveness of current preschool and kindergarten practices and curricula, determining their effectiveness and appropriateness within the realm of Challenger’s mission and values. Work with operations and management team to create and implement new practices as advised.
3. In coordination with the Department, annually review curriculum-related forms for accuracy and clarity before re-publishing.
4. Review and evaluate equipment, toys, and curriculum supplements of preschool and kindergarten rooms and playgrounds.
5. In conjunction with your manager and stakeholders, oversee the Preschool Survey and kindergarten evaluation practices. Oversee preschool Show-Off tests and kindergarten Challenger Achievement Tests (CATs) and evaluation of the tests. Evaluate their viability and credibility, as well as other standardized testing devices.
6. Revise and create as necessary the content of the preschool and kindergarten curricula, in coordination with and as directed by your manager.
7. Travel to assigned campuses to retrieve information concerning curriculum content in observing the effectiveness and presentation of the curriculum.
8. Assist in observing primarily preschool and kindergarten campus events and activities.
9. Observe and evaluate utilization and effectiveness of supplies provided in supporting preschool and kindergarten curriculum delivery.
10. As requested, coordinate with your manager on content for workshop presentations. Assist as necessary in the delivery of fall workshops and supplemental training and evaluate the level of success.
11. Contribute to the creation of supplemental teacher training videos, implementation of digital learning tools and new technology for teachers and students as requested by manager.
12. Collaborate with the Curriculum Department and technology partners to adapt preschool and kindergarten curriculum content into digital platforms (e.g., tablet-based phonics and phoneme applications). Ensure all digital implementations preserve Challenger’s mission, values, and instructional fidelity.
12. Respond promptly and effectively to recommendations of and tasks assigned by manager.
III. Qualifications
A. Education and Experience
A college degree and two years teaching experience in preschool and one other grade level at Challenger, or
At least four years demonstrated effectively teaching in preschool and kindergarten at Challenger, or
Equivalent experience.
B. Knowledge, Skills, and Physical Requirements
1. Have sufficient math and English language skills to perform the essential functions of this position.
2. Understand and embrace Challenger philosophy and methodology and values of the original Constitution.
3. Maintain emotional control and stability in all activities of this position for the safety and well-being of children, clientele, and employees.
4. The physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position:
a. Move freely in an office, classroom, parking lot, and playground environment; run (move quickly) from an outside post to any part of the assigned area.
b. Stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; reach with hands and arms; use hands effectively in order to handle and feel objects and tools that are pertinent to position; and possess all five senses.
c. Possess visual abilities including color perception, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus; see well at least 500 feet.
d. Be able to lift a student, weighing up to 40 pounds, under the arms at least 12 inches off the ground.
