This position is open to active enrolled CUSM MD students in the classes of 2027 and 2028. Candidates' USMLE scores may be reviewed for the position. Position Purpose A USMLE Teaching Assistant Tutor at CUSM is an M3 or M4 medical student or peer educator who helps fellow students prepare for USMLE Step 1. The goal is to build students’ readiness and confidence while working with the Board Preparation Team. Tutors focus on students who are behind or have had difficulties with Step 1. They provide direct coaching, content help, and encouragement, under the guidance of the Director of USMLE Board Prep. Tutors must follow the CUSM USMLE Board Prep guidelines and standardized methodology, including approved study plan templates, readiness criteria, and documentation requirements. Tutors may not introduce alternative prep methods or readiness recommendations without approval from the Board Preparation Team. Tutors must be dependable, clear in communication, and accurate in tracking student progress. Essential Functions * Implement the CUSM Board Prep plan and methodology, help students organize study schedules, and review high yield content in alignment with faculty guidance. * Notice when a student needs more than subject help (e.g., personal issues, anxiety, scheduling problems) and connect them with the Board Prep Team or academic coaching staff. * Monitor practice exam scores and study milestones. Log progress in shared tracking tools so everyone is aware of each student’s status * Set up study groups, review sessions, or Q&As where students help each other. * After practice work, point out areas to improve and offer study advice. Keep students motivated and focused throughout preparation. * Give extra help to those who are behind or have failed Step 1. Work with them on a recovery plan and stay updated on their progress. * Use CUSM’s approved tracking tools to record student progress and session outcomes, and share updates with the Board Prep Team as required. * Apply the CUSM readiness and risk escalation workflow consistently, and refer red flag concerns to the Board Prep Team promptly. * Attend required training and calibration meetings with USMLE Faculty Advisors and the Director of USMLE Board Prep to maintain consistent messaging and process. * Conduct sessions and follow up using CUSM approved platforms and templates. Do not use personal messaging for student advising. Minimum Qualifications * Must be in good academic and professionalism standing. * Enrollment as an M3 or M4 student at CUSM. * Must have passed USMLE Step 1 Preferred Qualifications * Previous experience as a tutor. * Previous experience as a teaching assistant. Skills and Abilities * Ideal candidates will know the material well, communicate clearly, show empathy, and be reliable. * Must act professionally, respect students’ privacy, and set a positive tone for their peers. * Knowledgeable of USMLE examination. * Ability to uphold a high level of professionalism with other students, faculty, and staff. * Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate information and concepts efficiently and concisely. * Ability to balance the needs of multiple students at any one time. * Approachable demeanor and willing to help when requested. * Maintain a timesheet of hours worked and with whom.
