POSITION TITLE: Custodian Helper - Part time (20 hours per week) DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood LOCATION(S): Bronx, NY REPORTS TO: Site Director SALARY RANGE: $18.37 per hour DATE: February 2026 SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8am-4pm, or 9am-5pm, 10am-6pm. Schedule may vary due to program needs. JOB SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the director, the custodian is responsible for maintaining the center premises and its equipment in clean, safe and comfortable conditions. Maintains and does a daily check of the site and reports any concerns to the Site Director. For the start-up phase for 2 years this will be an evolving position. Interim roles and responsibilities will be adjusted and this position requires an individual to be flexible. Job responsibilities will be revisited once all center-based sites are up and running. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS: * Minimum: High School Diploma or Equivalent * Previous related experiences in general janitorial duties, such as cleaning, repairing and painting. * Ability to read and write in order to follow written work schedules and keep inventory. * Friendly and cheerful personality to maintain cooperative interactions with staff, families and children * Ability to maintain personal work and habits. * Good health- including annual physical. * Must pass 3 Fire safety examinations within the first 5 months of employment, F-01, F-07, S-95. PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS: * Successfully clear; NYS DOI Fingerprint Screening, NYS Central Registry Clearance, Sex Offender Registry Clearance, three (3) reference checks, physical examination with updated TB test, Tdap, MMR, varicella (fees may apply). * Meet all employee health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start performance standards. * Mandated Reporter training certificate (every 2 years) and comply with agency’s policy and procedure regarding identification and reporting of child abuse and neglect. * Obtain First Aid/CPR and Preventive infectious diseases certificate within the first year of employment. * Meets all health requirements in Article 47 (DOHMH) and Head Start Performance standards. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Custodian Helper's responsibilities chiefly fall within the following core functions, although s/he may perform other tasks as needed and dependent on DOH/ACS/DOE standards: Custodian Helper works with the Custodian to ensure the following: 1. Cleaning: Responsible for sweeping, mopping, waxing all floors on site. Ensuring rest rooms and ALL spaces on site are free of debris, dust, and dirt as well as maintaining sanitary conditions throughout the day. This includes removing and cleaning garbage bins, washing walls and surfaces, cleaning fixtures, toilets and washbowls. 2. Records, Supplies and Equipment: Responsible for maintenance of Infection Control Logs, playground safety logs, carbon monoxide/smoke alarm fire panel logs and all other logs to remain in compliance with DOH article 47. Keeping inventory of distributed sanitary supplies and requesting more when needed; Repairing peeling paint, play equipment, furniture and other repairs on site as needed; Assisting in moving heavy items throughout the site. Custodian will maintain an inventory log and place orders for the site. 3. Daily maintenance of site health and safety: Responsible for immediately repairing hazardous conditions on site, such as within the classroom and/or playground, replacing lights; calling management if needed to place tickets on necessary repairs.
